My wife and I are in the process of planning a relocation to the east valley. As such, we've both been scouring the big job sites. We both do business/IT-related work.

One thing I'm noticing is that many positions make a point to call out something to the effect of "local candidates only". I just saw one that said "only candidates local to Phoenix need apply" in bold letters.

Why is this? If a company isn't offering relocation assistance (and most do not), then just say that in the posting. And if they need someone by a certain date, then say that too. And if those two things are agreed upon up front, then what difference does it make if someone is local or relocating?

This is especially curious to me for professional positions. It's not like we're a couple of transient bums that will be sleeping in our cars in the parking lot until our shift starts.

I would guess that they are looking to fill the position quickly? I have never understood that requirement either, especially with a transient state like AZ. People are moving to/from the state all the time. Or maybe they want someone who is already here rather than offer the position to someone that then hates the city and leaves in 6 months?

Huh...I never thought of that, but you might be onto something. They might see relocators as people that may or may not be around in the medium-term. We've been to the area twice and love the hell out of it (summer heat included). I'll have to find a way to professionally explain in my cover letter that we're in it for the long-haul.

My guess is that this company wants to filter applicants right out of the gate and these employers don't want to deal with the "I guarantee I am moving" crowd.

They probably get a lot of out of area applicants and are looking for someone who can come in for an interview with a few days. If you're local, what's the difference?

Some employers think that those that have never lived through a summer here won't be able to take it and will run "home"

Interesting. So the consensus seems to be that employers lack confidence that transplants stick around long-term. I'm sure many do come and go due to the heat intolerance, insufficient planning, etc.

Sounds like we might be better off going through a staffing agency first.

Check with Randstad. I know the do a lot of staffing here.

I was in a similar situation. Places I applied to work wouldn't even talk to me until I lived out here. It was frustrating but I do respect the companies for wanting to hire local.

In a lot of IT positions they will post that because they do not want to sponsor anyone's work visa. There is a lot of people coming from overseas to work in that field and trust me, its a huge hassle.

^^^This is very true. Phoenix area is known as a transitory area and many company's want someone who has settled down here, likes it, and is not going to try out the position and not like it here and move on.
