Why not? There are people that do crazy stuff like that now. This will make that a tad easier and encourage more of it. I have seen many posts here where somebody is moving from somewhere else, trying to decide where to live, saying that they wouldn't mind a one hour commute.

If that was the purpose it would be a lot cheaper to upgrade the route through Gila Bend to Interstate standards.

A) the gila bend route is ~10 miles longer than the current route through downtown Phx- let alone how much longer it would be than the new proposed smf. There would be no incentive for bypass traffic to take a bypass that was that much longer than the straight through route. It would be nearly a complete waste.

B) the smf has the added benefit to the local commuters from the s/e valley to points west.

As an Ahwatukee resident, I'll have to disagree with most of these posts. I sincerely hope this proposed freeway will sit in litigation for years and then be scrapped.

I've hiked the National Trail, and I expect the scars in the ridges and the freeway will be visible from that path where it turns near the park's western edge. The newly established Bursera Trail, which I haven't hiked yet, looks like it will be even closer to the affected ridges. Even if I'm wrong and no hiker on any established trail will ever see the freeway, that means the area involved is pristine desert mountain and therefore even more worthy of preservation. I don't expect this explanation to change the mind of a single SMF supporter, but you asked a question, and I owe you the courtesy of a reply.

EVERY Phoenix area resident lives on land that was once "pristine desert"....

bring it on!....

I feel no sorrow for Ahwatukee residents....this has been on the books for thirty years and known to them since then - what percentage of current Ahwatukee residents have been there that long?.....

yes, three minor ridges will be cut into for it.....should we list all the other ridges, hillsides, mountains, washes that have been carved into during Phoenix's 145 years of existence?.....

It's not like South Mountain doesn't already have a long paved road going all the way through it to the top or anything...

SMF is going to be going through one single mile in the very far southwest corner. I know the Summit road or whatever it is, is longer than that and winds all over the place up the mountain. Then there's San Juan Rd, TV Rd, Rd B, Rd D, Central Ave. etc. etc. etc. Want to talk about "eye sores" and "violations"? How about all those roads that go all over the place across, up, down, and through the park?

There are lots of nice houses and golf courses going up all over the place, in what was once open desert. I really hope this freeway doesn't get delayed anymore. 30+ years is long enough.

Start construction on the north-south section first, if the east-west section gets delayed for whatever reason.

10 extra miles, if that is accurate, is a small price to pay to avoid the congestion in central Phoenix. A trucker might be able to blow through doing the speed limit during off hours, but sitting in stop and go traffic at rush hour has to be time consuming and costly.
