Hi There,

We currently live in South Scottsdale. We have a doggy door that allows the dogs unlimited in and out access to the backyard during the day while we're at work.

My fear, rational or irrational, is that as we approach summer the snakes and scorpions will be out. Now, I live in South Scottsdale, so the issue is obviously not as pressing as if, say, I lived further north.

For those of you who also have dogs, do you allow them in and out during the summer months?

Thanks!

I give my dog unlimited access outside as well and have zero critter concerns.

There shouldnt be any issues. Its not like snakes hunt out access doors or anything, nor would I suspect theyd want to come inside unless you have a rodent issue.

Oh, I should have been clear. I'm not concerned with critters getting in the house. I'm more concerned with my dogs being bitten or stung.

I'd be more worried about coyotes depending on the dogs' sizes.

That is a really good concern OP. I wouldn't want them to be unsupervised outside for a number of reasons for their protection. Have you thought about sprinkler systems? I don't know if that would kinda keep away snakes etc. Do you have a good fenced off area?

If it were my dog(s), I'd be just as concerned that my dog(s) left out unsupervised in my backyard would bark and disrupt the peace and quiet of my neighbors. I hope this is at least an equal concern of yours.

As for your dogs getting hurt/injured by desert wildlife, you have a valid concern. And the threat doesn't just come from scorpions, rattle snakes, coyotes, or bobcats. Our neighbor lost their dog last year from a poisonous toad(or frog), don't recall which, that was in their backyard. He saw his dog playing with something he thought was the dog's ball and turns out he was licking the toad/frog. The dog started throwing up and died very quickly before they could rush him to the vet. My neighbor told me the toad/frog secrets a poison on its skin that is deadly to animals. This was a good size dog too.

With all the missing dogs(coyote or bobcat grab and runs), getting bit by snakes(we know another neighbor who lost their dog in this manner), toad, scorpions, etc. I've heard about over the years, I would never leave a dog we owned unsupervised in our backyard. And I equally wouldn't feel right subjecting my neighbors to potential irritating dog barking.

Snakes do not hunt dogs, and most dogs are smart enough to avoid snakes. On top of that dogs have stronger immune systems and can tolerate snake/spider bites better than humans. Yes, your fears are irrational

Snakes in south Scottsdale? No. If you have a scorpion problem, you know that already, as they are year round critters and are going to be inside and outside. If you haven't seen them yet, don't worry about it.

My dog was left all day, with a dog door. They don't stay outside in that scenario. They go outside to do their business, perhaps respond to a noise, and go back in. I NEVER had a problem. I didn't go outside with her when I was home, either.

In the interest of being a good neighbor as well as for the dog's own safety, I wouldn't ever advocate leaving dogs unattended outside for more than a few minutes.
