I will be horseback riding in Cave Creek (southern edge of the Tonto National Forest/Spur Cross area) in about ten days. I've been riding in this area in the past in the months of November, December, late March, and mid May, but never mid April, so I'm hoping to see the desert in bloom. When I rode last year in March, there were many cactus that were just about to bloom but hadn't yet. Will there still be lots blooming in the next two weeks?

The trails are beautiful regardless. I'm also traveling with some friends who've never been to the real desert parts of Arizona (just the Phoenix/Scottsdale resort parts ) so I'd love for them to see the desert in all its splendor.

Thank you!

It was a pretty pathetic wildflower season despite all of the rain we got earlier. All the rain seemed to do was make the grasses and weeds grow bigger. On my hikes this year the wildflowers seemed to peak about 2-3 weeks ago. About all that is still blooming right now are the palo verde trees.

Cactus blooms are getting near the end of the season. It was a good year for the cactus and there were a lot of blooms and new growth. There is still some, but its definitely not what it was a week ago. Saguaro is just starting now, though. Palo verde this year is just about as good as it gets, but it has peaked as well. As previous poster said, wildflowers were meager again. The rains were not spaced well for wild flowers. It's been quite a while since we have seen a good wildflower season.

It was a hot winter, everything peaked much earlier than normal.
