We are retiring to Phoenix in September. We will be renting an apartment/condo/townhouse for the first year. During previous visits we fell in love with the Desert Ridge area and like The Shade apartment complex. Any suggestions for what the best value/quality apartments for North Central/North East Phoenix?

I liked 90 Degrees. Shade struck me as a concrete box with hallways, and their living environment really didn't age well. 90 degrees is at Mayo & 68th.

On the other hand, at any of the new apartments up there, you should make sure you get a floorplan with plenty of natural light. They tend to be smaller.

You might also consider renting a condo at Toscana, on Cave Creek across from City North/High Street. Very nice floor plans.

Also, Mark-Taylor is building a new apartment development near 101/Scottsdale Rd. It's not Desert Ridge, but it's very close. Their management processes tend to be superior - so many awful management companies out there! That is supposed to be ready by winter, so it may not work with your time frame, but it should be on any short list if the timing works.

Good luck!

It really depends on how far north you want to live, especially when you stated "north central" as one of the areas you're interested in. Desert Ridge is approaching the far northern edge of Phoenix, and isn't north central by any means. If you're looking more in the Desert Ridge area, most everything will be fairly new. This complex you're looking at seems like it has pretty average rent prices ... but of course, a lot of it depends on your budget.
