I've been a cactus and succulent nut for many years, and have been able to keep my plants alive in chicagoland all this time, so I am pretty good at knowing what might survive out there, and, obviously, some wont be able to deal with being planted in the ground..plus, I want a few in the house to look at too!
things like golden barrels, various euphorbia, and other desert natives should do well, I am just not sure if the need a dirt/pearlite/coconut shell/cacti mix foundation like they live in now, or if there is a different method for planting them in the ground, versus the pots they have lived in while being held hostage in Chicago!
one of the things I am looking forward to the most by moving there is finally ending the in and out of the house nightmare I go through in chicago twice a year...they come in the house in September, and go back out in May..I recently donated a LARGE collection of very large cacti to the Chicago Cactus and Succulent Society, as it was getting to be a real nightmare bringing in and out things like a 6 foot tall Saguaro, and my 150lb golden barrel..
Thanks again for the response, and I sort of figured that was the way to plant them in the ground..
If they are natives or related then you just dig a hole and drop them in. Golden barrels and saguaro are examples of the dig and drop kind. No need for anything. But be aware that many cacti grown ornamentally are not well suited for the heat here or for the freezes in winter. Some benefit from a little extra water than falls normally. There are some great cactus nurseries around where you can get started in building a new family here.

OP when in Rome do as the Romans do, so go to a pro cactus nursery and ask how they're done here. Or call the U of A extension service for advice.
2 things to remember cacti like well drained planting holes and be careful on the watering until they are established. They also need to be planted in the right direction in relation to the sun plus some need to be planted in am sun with pm shade. Educate yourself when you get here before planting so you can be successful and not lose some beauties.

I don't think you need to do anything but put-down heavy plastic and cover it with gravel.... the grass will die from no light and reduced air/water???????

"freezes in the winter"? now you are scaring me!
do I need to cover them up when that happens, or do they learn to handle the morning chill?
What exactly does a "freeze in winter" mean here?
In chicago, that means death to most cacti/succulents..

Great advice; I will most likely leave them all in containers when I first get out here, and learn how the sun moves in relation to my yard location..I always mark my pots with the "sun" direction, so I can keep track of which side of the plant faces south(where my yard faces in chicago)
are there "landscapers" who specialize in Xeriscaping that can come to my house and look at my plants and tell me where they can go?
and, I assume planting most succulents is an iffy proposition, unless they are in an area that gets good shade during the heat of the day..
Thanks!

Sounds like you've got plenty of cacti/succulents experience! These two sites are blessings for me.

150lb golden barrel is huge! FWIW, my golden barrels have done great with supplemental water. I don't water them more than once a week though, starting about now and lasting probably until October or so. They were tiny Home Depot buys and have more than doubled in size in two years. Also, supposedly full sun here in the valley is too harsh for them, but YMMV. Mine get afternoon shade from a mesquite tree.
I know there are xeriscape specialists, I can't say I have any experience with them though.

thanks for the links!
I see lots of pics of golden barrels in full sunlight, and thats where I keep my monster one here..
So, what happens during your "winter" to the cactus planted in the ground?
I assume it doesnt stay below freezing for too long; at least not like here in chicago where it can below freezing for a month or more straight...
Do you have to take any precautions with your planted cactus during your "winter"?
Thanks

My golden barrels are in the ground in full sun and doing just fine. Cactus need a lot less water than people think as you probably know. My Agave are growing like weeds and I rarely water them! One planted in November has 3 off shoots already that I'll be donating to family and friends to plant!

nice info!
When I bring my plants in for our 7 month winter, I water the "leafy" succulents every 3 weeks, and the cactus get watered once a month, at the most; some of the ones, like a few I have that grow on rocks and stuff in the desert, I only water 2 or 3 times over a 7 month indoor hiatus; you are right, most people dont know how much better these plants do when you under water them vs over water..
do you take any precautions over your "winter" with plants like the golden barrels?

Golden barrels are fine. I have (had) some of what I think are euphorbia type ones that got frozen back pretty good this winter. Freeze means dipping to 20s for a few hours one or two times each winter. The natives are all fine, of course. You'll just have to research the frost hardiness of your plants you are bringing. You should not have to bring them in, but it may be necessary to provide a cover or some heat source once in a while. You see people putting styrofoam cups on the tips of some the the slightly sensitive ones on cold winter nights.

I also add a bit of fertilizer sporadically to our cactus. I've found it makes them grow a bit faster and they just look healthier, both native and non varieties. I've found the agave's are the one's you have to be really careful about watering. They like it very dry and will yellow out/rot quickly if they get too much water. Once a month at most on the water I found works well when I want to get some quicker growth out of the smaller agave's.
On frost nights in the Phoenix valley, I've never covered our golden barrels planted in open spaces and they have no issues. They can take some pretty low temps that our valley will never see.
Golden Barrel (Echinocactus grusonii)
Low water use plants for Arizona
They also are very forgiving of watering/don't complain if you water them every few weeks in the warmer months. Given they are slow growers, a bit of extra water will get them bigger faster if that's one's goal.
The tropical/some of the sub-tropical cactus or succulents are the one's you have to watch for. On sites like the one's I listed above, just type in the name of the plant you have and you can find the low temp it can take. When you see they are sensitive in the 30's or at 32, you know you better cover that plant if it's in an open area. For tropical sensitive cactus/succulents, I made my life easier and plant them as understory plants under trees like our Palo Verdes. They provide just enough frost protection and let enough filtered sun in to keep the plants happy and no covering is needed for frost nights.
