I'm surprised about Prescott, but to be honest, I wouldn't mind retiring there. Good weather and open spaces!!

I remain baffled why anyone would want to retire to a city of 4 million people. There must be better choices than this place.

Healthcare, entertainment, dining, spring training baseball, proximity to a major airport, golf.

I plan to retire to a much larger metro area but I will be by the ocean

I have no use for any of that stuff or even casinos and buffets. I guess if I did I might see it differently.

Really, you don't need healthcare?

Not much. Haven't been to a doc in a couple years. I don't take any pills. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Even then, healthcare is available everywhere. Who is to say that the doc in Sun City are any better than those in Smalltown, Ohio? I suppose if you need it you can get extraordinary care in a city like Phoenix, but I doubt that is what is on the minds of most who come here.

LOL well we're talking retirees. The bulk of which are not new, younger retirees like yourself. They want access to hospitals and specialists. You may not need entertainment and dining, but I think a bulk would appreciate someone else cooking them a meal a couple times a week, if they can afford it and enjoy movies and other things. Doesn't need to happen in a city as big as Phoenix but usually only the moderate sized cities and larger will have what a retiree typically wants.

Prescott has a population in the 40k range for those who want a small town feel.

Or of course living in the valley in one of the suburbs in the outskirts can feel worlds away from everything(parts of Cave Creek, North Scottsdale, Buckeye, etc.). While Estrella has gotten bigger obviously over the years, we are still a very small pocket comparatively to even a city like Prescott.
