Fountain Hills is located in the north east of Scottsdale and a very nice community. I’ve been in the Phoenix area for 25 + years and have sever friends who live in Fountain Hills. They have told me about the same problems that [shadow91] has mentioned in his post.

Any area in the metro Phoenix valley that is “near” a mountain preserve has some of these problems. I live about three blocks away and this year found that two desert foxes found my backyard bushes the best place for them to make their new home. None of the animal control agencies in the area wanted to deal with the problem. I did find that I was able to discourage them by placing several small pinwheels on sticks at the entrance that they used to get in and out of the bushes. Every time a small breeze blew the pinwheels would turn and discouraged the fox from returning.

The best way to hand the spiders and scorpions is to remove their food source (bugs). I have a controlled amount of professional spray done monthly outside the house and I don’t have any problems with bugs or other critters.

Coyotes, fox, and other animals do jump over the block walls in my area, but for the most part I’ve only heard of cats that turn up missing when people allow them to run outside the house at night. This is ideal for the coyotes evening dinner.

May I ask what type of professional bug spray you use? Do you spray it yourself and how safe is it with kids and pets around? Where can I get it and how much approx? Do you spray it all around the outside of your house? Does Arizona have any mice/rate problems? In Ca. we have a rat/mice problem. They live in trees (tree rats), under the deck and in the garage. They don't come in the house, probably because of my 8 lb. dog (he hates rodents). When you say bugs and other critters, what exactly do you mean (ants, roaches, anything else?)

Thanks

did i forget to mention the javelina pigs? They are thick here too. Can't leave your garage door open because they come in and rip open your garbage. We have mice here but I have yet to see one in my house. I think my dogs chase them in the back yard and they fall into the pool and drowned. Now if only we could get a coyote in there!!! I would think with this problem in FH that the city would do something about it. I live on a golf course and they are out there everyday.

I have a professional guy come and spray around the outside of the house. I don’t know what he has been using and he will change the type of spray from time to time, but he sprays mainly in the yard area (rocks) and around the shrubbery, nothing inside the house. I don’t do this myself because I have had reactions to some types of chemicals and I really don’t like handling chemical sprays. The guy I use comes each month. I have not seen any problems with any bugs in or around the house. He told me that if we keep the bugs under control that the spiders and scorpions would not be here looking for their next meal, so I’ve never had any problems so far. It must be a safe spray because I continue to have a lot of birds that continue to visit the yard each day.

Yes Phoenix area has a problem with mice and rats but again you have to keep their food source under control. Don’t leave dog food outside, keep the citrus picked off the trees and cleanup under them if you have any citrus trees in the yard. There have been “roof rats” that were located in the east valley that loved the homes in the citrus orchards. I don’t think I’ve heard much about them this year. I also understand that scorpions love the citrus trees and live with those who have homes in the old orchards. My cousin would take a “black-light” outside at night and catch 50 or more every night that he would go outside for weeks. He also had them inside the house as well.

Thanks for the information. May I have the name and number of the company that sprays your house and approximately how much he charges?
Sincerely, Encinitas
