So I was just looking at some crime stats from the FBI. And 10-15 years ago the Phoenix area was almost as dangerous as the Detroit area. Take a look...

Homicide Rate - Phoenix MSA
2000 - 8.1
2001 - 10.9
2002 - 9.6
2003 - 9.8
2004 - 9.3
2005 - 9.9
2006 - 9.9
2007 - 9.2
2008 - 7.5
2009 - 6.1
2010 - 6.1
2011 - 5.5
2012 - 5.8
2013 - 5.5

Homicide Rate - Detroit MSA
2000 - 11.7
2001 - 11.5
2002 - 11.6
2003 - 11.1
2004 - 10.7
2005 - 10.7
2006 - 11.7
2007 - 11.7
2008 - 10.6
2009 - 10.8
2010 - 9.8
2011 - 10.6
2012 - 11.9
2013 - 10.1

As you can see...in 2001 and 2005 the Phoenix area almost had a murder rate as high as the Detroit area! Of course PHX has gotten alot safer since then. What do you think?

You're worried about 10 years ago? Good grief. PHX crime rate is trending consistently downward in your stats. That's the REAL news.

A better test would be to match up Phoenix and Detroit alone: leaving out Mesa, Tempe, and so on along the suburbs of Detroit off the list.

If you avoid the bad areas both Phoenix and Detroit are incredibly safe.

Like most major Americans cities, serious crime in Phoenix is generally confined to people who buy and sell illegal drugs. Law enforcement also appears, from statistics I've read, to be rather trigger happy — especially when dealing with the mentally ill. But there's nothing unique about that either. Many urban areas, including the much smaller city of Tucson to the south, have the same problem.

Detroit is much more dangerous than Phoenix, it has always ranked high in violent crime and continues to have one of the highest homicide rates of any other city.

Detroit has all the negatives that contribute to a high crime rate, poverty, high unemployment, and other socioeconomic factors.

Phoenix has bad areas with high crime but the city itself is pretty safe in comparison to Detroit.

Sorry, but I don't see the connection. Those are meaningless numbers without context. So there's a difference of "2". 2 what exactly?

I think the more significant question is how did PHX reduce its rate and what can other cities glean from that success?

It is curious that Phoenix metro cut their murder rate almost in half while Detroit Metro cut their rate only about 10%...why was Phoenix successful...better Sheriff?

The other thing is Detroit city has a murder rate almost 6 times higher than the city of Phoenix but once you get out of the city of Detroit into the burbs, it's very safe.
