Just got the final word today that I need to move to Phoenix (have long wanted to) for my job and be there by April 1. I will be working from home, so I can live anywhere. Wife hasn't lined up a job there yet and I don't want her to have a tough commute. But just so we can start planning our scouting visit, are some areas around Phoenix a few degrees cooler than others? I don't mind all the heat the sun can throw at me. But my wife will not love it.

Wickenburg (30 miles from Surprise). Hot during the summer days but cools down at night. Your not going to escape the day time heat anywhere near the Metro area.

Really, the areas around Phx do not differ. If they do, then it's mostly in the winter and it will be a few degrees colder in the outer areas, but that's about it. You can't escape the summers in Phx unless you drive up to Prescott on the weekends.

It's cooler in Cave Creek, Anthem (near New River), and Carefree by about 2-5 degrees on a typical summer day. Probably not enough to notice. You will be sitting in the house and your wife will be paying the price for your 5 degrees by having to commute a longer distance/time in the heat.

That's a good way to look at it! So what's the commute like between Cave Creek and downtown? Just curious. Ideally, wife would be able to work from home too.

Have you considered Tucson at all? Its quite a bit cooler than PHX, but still quite hot in summer (naturally). Or since youre working from home, what about Flagstaff (very cool)?

I was also going to say Tucson. During most of the year, it's several degrees cooler on average, and about 10-15 degrees cooler at night. During the monsoon season, Tucson gets the monsoon full blast whereas it only brushes up against Phoenix most of the time. Last July, August, September, and October, there were many days when it was 110 in Phoenix, humid, but no rain, and 85 in Tucson, with beautiful desert rain. I'm actually considering moving to Tucson (among other places), but Phoenix is crossed off the list-- and the barbaric heat is my number one reason.

Tucson and Carefree are at almost exactly the same elevation and have very similar temperature profiles. It does rain more in Tucson in summer as it is further SE and closer to the monsoon moisture flux. It is possible to get a little "higher" in the Tucson area and thus find a tad more relief from summer temps than in the city - something you need a big bank account to do in Phoenix and then its only a minimal improvement. Having lived in both places, I wouldn't move to Tucson looking for temperature relief. Cordes Junction (aka Lakes) or Camp Verde (or Wickenburg as suggested) would be closer to Phoenix and cooler too. Maybe no Cox cable there, though.

What about Cave Creek and Fountain Hills, which are higher up? My FIL lives in North Scottsdale and we've observed 8-10 degree differences between Chase Field and his house in one night. Id imagine Fountain Hills would be even cooler, since its higher up than Scottsdale? I dont know the stats, and I could be flat-out wrong, but it just seems cooler up there.

I would actually prefer Tucson, but I need to be near Phoenix for business and I'm sure the job market in Tucson is not as good for my wife as in Phoenix. She's a business analyst and will be looking for job. I don't think her current job in DC will let her stay on and work remotely.
