I'm glad this thread popped up again. I wanted to follow up from my earlier post but couldn't find it.
Anyway, you can try comparing prices at 1-800-mattress or Tempurpedic Mattress, Simmons, Serta, Sealy Mattresses - 1800 Mattress. My sister said it's usually about $100 cheaper than other stores.

I would second Sleep America. First, it's a locally owned business and it's very well run and treats customers with respect. They will match any deal and beat it by 10 percent and include free shipping. You can negotiate with them. Their beds are great quality too. I bough two matresses from them and their quality has stood up. I went to the other chain stores in town like Mattress Firm etc. and the salespeople were really slick and pushy. At Sleep America, they were really layed back and didn't apply any pressure sales tactics.

Quality Department stores regularly have half off sales. I agree Matress Firm and places like that are A BIG RIPOFF!! Find one on sale at a dept store, or I'll send you back to NOLA,

follow up
I have determined that there are pushy mattress salespeople at all different stores, it's really a matter of lucking into one that isn't pushy. I visited several Sleep America stores, several Mattress Firm stores, a Sleep Saavy, Bed America and a few others. Sometimes had nice sales people and sometimes they were pushy and obnoxious. I visited the same Sleep American twice and had totally different experiences at the same store. Sleep America was running a king for price of a queen, but the comparable mattres was more at Sleep America, even with the sale, I think the sale is maybe just a sales ploy. Most mattress stores say the beat the competitors pricing, but that is realy hard on mattresses b/c each store has a different name for the mattress so they will all say it's not the same mattress. My experience, it really came down to the sales person, the mattress we liked was comparable at all of them.

A friend of mine bought a mattress at Sleep America. there last thursday. It was a 1400 dollar mattress. He said, "I will buy this mattress right now for 900" and the guy said "Deal" I got a King Sealy Pillow top. I went to a lot of chain stores and took their ads with their published sales price. I took the cheapest price on a similar mattress. Sleep America beat that price by 10% and included free delivery to my house. I agree with you though. I think it depends on your salesrep. I just happened to get pretty lucky though so I'm a proponent of the place.

I hate Mattress Firm. I will never buy a mattress from them again. Our crappy mattress is a constant reminder of how I hate that used car dealership, I mean mattress store. They ALWAYS have a sale going on, its quite amusing.
