Hi all,

I was wondering when you generally turn off your AC for the fall/winter?

I think it depends on the weather and one's tolerance.

This year, a little later than "average" given the higher temps and humidity/dew point for us. We've had ours off and open our windows for about 1 week now though we've had it periodically on for the last couple of weeks. Looking at where the temps are now and the forecast, our A/C use is done until next June. Open windows rule.

When the outside temps are lower than the inside settings. Then we can finally air out the house.

When it cools off and dries up. Right now the smell of the rain soaked ground is a bit much to let in the house.

Shouldn't you have your heat on by now?

I have really dark shade screens on all of my windows and one downside to them is that they block a bit of air flow with the windows open. I've had the AC off for a few days except for in the late evenings I'll run it for about 45 mins to chill down the upstairs before bed.

The process of turning off the AC here comes in stages. First stage is turning it off in the morning and opening some doors and windows for a couple of hours in the morning. That started about a month ago. The cat appreciates it. Second is leaving it off all day but then turning it back on at night (last few days). Finally when the temperature in the house at bedtime is at or below the nighttime thermostat temperature (77) it gets left off, hopefully until spring. That happened last night.

I rarely use the heat since I have lived here. No need. I think last year I just ran it a couple of days all winter.

Under 75 degrees I bust out the fans. I'll still chill my room with a portable a/c when I sleep if, it's 70 or higher when I go to bed. It's nice to be able to air out the place and not have to run the central a/c. I enjoyed not running it yesterday and likely won't have to today. Supposed to be pushing 90 again in a few days so too bad this nice weather won't last.
