I'm a Texas native who grew up with Blue Bell Ice Cream and my husband was a quick convert after moving to Texas from California.

After living in New Hampshire for two years (where Blue Bell is completely unknown), we were hoping to find Blue Bell back here, but alas, they're having some serious issues and it looks like it will be a VERY long time before we get to buy a 1/2 gallon of gold rimmed homemade vanilla again.

So I am asking the awesome locals - what is the best ice cream in the Phoenix area? Is there a preferred brand? Would like to hear your recommendations on this highly important subject.

Thanks in advance!

I have no preferred brands or favorite as such, but don't mind the regular store-bought ice creams (usually Safeway) when they're on sale. However, I do love the DQ!

Which begs the question: since there is a Dairy Queen on just about every corner in Texas, why aren't you into DQ?

Haha...DQ is great, but it's soft serve. My husband LOVES homemade vanilla and is really picky. I think it's probably easier to find the lost ark of the covenant than to find an ice cream he likes. haha

It took us about 6 months to find Giffords up north. Their french vanilla tasted closest to BB Homemade Vanilla and in a pinch, he doesn't mind Breyer's Va-Va Vanilla (yeah...I say "in a pinch" haha).

He only allows himself to have ice cream once a week so he wants to have the good stuff so I'm trying to help him out.

I'm almost positive that Blue Bell is sold here. What are their serious issues?

Ah I see.

This stuff is my weakness. Way better than ice cream IMO.

Blue Bell USED to be made and sold here, but after the listeria outbreak and the deaths of a couple of consumers, they halted all production and closed their AZ plant. They have reopened 1-2 plants and are slowly starting to roll out production again. Right now they are only in parts of Texas and southern Oklahoma. No plans have been announced to either reopen their facility here or sell their product here. They are trying to be cautious (understandably).

I've seen Talenti, but wasn't sure about it - we need to give it a whirl!

Ben & Jerry's vanilla ice cream is excellent. Vanilla is such a simple ce cream flavour that you have to have super high quality ingredients to stand out and Ben & Jerry's only uses the best!
