I'm looking to sign with a local Traveler's broker for homeowners insurance, but I wasn't too thrilled with the few agents I talked to in my area - several within a few blocks of me. Then it hit me - it doesn't have to be in my area, because they don't come over to visit, anyway. It could be anywhere, let's say East Valley and Central Phoenix? Anyone you like?

I had Travelers a while back for Condo Insurance, but recently decided to go back this month after State Farm jacked up my rates again.

I now have auto and home with them. I never dealt with a local agent, I did it all over the phone. It was a good experience overall. Every time I called with questions I never waited on hold and the people I talked to seemed like they knew what they were walking about. My rates are much lower than they were through State Farm for both home and Auto (like $300 cheaper on the home!)

I have never had to file a claim, which would be the true test. But I feel pretty confident.

Travelers doesn't have captive agents - if you are enlisting an agent, make sure it's an independent agent who can get you a couple different options based on your coverage needs and be able to explain any differences.

You can also solicit quotes directly.

Right, I know you can go directly to Travelers, but I like the idea of a local agent. Oddly, connecting directly to Travelers saves you no money.

What I find puzzling is how different agents give you different prices for the same parameters.
