Can anybody recommend non chain Southern BBQ or Steak houses? Is Piggley's in Mesa any good? What about Allison's Texas Steakhouse? I'm looking for a good place to try out when I move down there in spring.

I like Dillons on Thunderbird & 101. There are other locations but this one is the best of them. Because of its proximity to Sun City it has an older crowd at times but the food is killer.

Probably not what you want, but worth mentioning if people look at the thread due to "BBQ" in the subject:

Little Miss BBQ serves Texas style barbecue. It's more or less a local version of Austin's famed Franklin BBQ. It's open from 11 each day until the meat runs out. Lines start forming much earlier. The brisket is a religious experience.

I'll throw in another. Joe's BBQ in DT Gilbert is also very good. Might not be southern, but it feels southern in there sometimes.

The Original Poster mentioned the T-Bone Steakhouse. I ate there a week ago. The food was good and it was just about the right price-point. My partner and I both had the rib-eye steak. They were cooked as requested (medium for both), but mine was a quite a bit fattier. The server asked if I wanted to see the manager when she saw the fat left on my plate, but I figured that is just the luck of the draw with the rib-eye cut, so I didn't pursue it. The drinks were good, and the view would be amazing in the summer when sitting outside at the picnic tables. The salad bar was quite simple, so don't expect a buffet line of salad options. I didn't notice if there were southern BBQ items on the menu, but the daily special was ribs.

For BBQ in South Phoenix, the Texas BBQ House at the corner of Roeser and 24th St is terrific. Like another BBQ place mentioned above, they only stay open til the meat runs out.

Rudys in Chandler is awesome. Their BBQ brisket is awesome, as are their simple breakfast tacos.
