Heard a swarm of about 100 bee-ish things hanging out just outside my balcony. Went to fill the sprayer and give 'em a shot, but they had stopped swarming by then (5 minutes or less).

Since then, I see fairly constant flying activity, at least 3 or 4 hanging out around my rooftop near where they swarmed. Unfortunately, I don't have a ladder tall enough to get to my (second-story) roof and inspect what they've built. I suspect they entered a hole and are building inside the wall, but I can't see from the street, and didn't notice anything yet in the attic.

My questions:
  1. How do I know for sure what type of bugs these are? I found a couple dead ones and don't really know how to tell hornets (bad, must die) from honeybees (maybe a pro can move the hive).
  2. Are there any free/cheap resources to deal with these, or must I pay over $100 to hire pest control? I'm going to make a poison trap with raw chicken and Cy-Kick CS, but that's not certain to rid me of them, especially if I have the wrong bug.
Thanks in advance!

PS I live in Peoria.

If you can take a pic of one of the dead ones and post it up, I'm sure someone can help identify them.

Here ya go. I'm thinking bees, due to the shortish, rounded wings. How'd I do?

Those are bees. If they have a hive in your building you need to remove them. You may need to have your wall repaired as well. Google bee removal phoenix and you will find people. You could also google beekeepers. I have no idea about the cost.

Assume they are Africanized bees and do not mess around with them yourself. Hire a reputable pro.

Yup, I'm pretty sure in Arizona, there's nothing left but Africanized honey bees in the wild, not your regular European types.

DO NOT shoot them with water otherwise do anything to provoke them. If one comes near, you shouldn't even swat at it as that will attract the attention of others and you will be in big trouble.

Is it an actual hive or just a swarm? If it is just a swarm, leave it alone, it will likely move on in a day or two.

Bees, then. That's a good thing.

That's also probably a good thing.

Correct on both counts. Lots of swarming going on these days.

DO NOT get up on any ladder to "inspect". Call a professional, if they have not moved on.

Thank for the advice. They swarmed last Monday, so just over a week now. Still regular activity. Not a ton, but still every day.

Can these be baited with poisoned traps, like hornets can? Or is that a bad idea, because we still need the bees for agriculture?
