With several light rail lines in the work, what do you think will be the nomenclature to differentiate them - colors, letters, numbers, or names?

I personally think colors are the most likely, since colors are used by the majority of rail systems around the world and there won't probably ever be enough lines to warrant the use of letters or numbers (my extensive dream system would have nine lines and would still use colors). In addition, there was once a bus route known as the Red Line that roughly served the existing light rail corridor, and I wouldn't be surprised if the existing light rail route becomes the Red Line as well.

Numbers I would say are the least likely since they could potentially be confused with bus routes.

Honest question here. What is your fascination with light rail route colors? I've seen you post quite a bit on the subject.

Well, I did post my dream light rail system here in these forums in the past, and I chose to color each of my lines appropriately either based on the order of construction or based on the areas they served to avoid being offensive to a particular demographic.
  • I used Red for the existing line and Blue for the proposed State Capitol branch, with extensions to Superstition Springs and Westgate, respectively. These two colors are usually the first to get assigned, thus it makes sense for such initial lines to use these colors.
  • I used Green for the Tempe Streetcar because for some reason I associate the City of Tempe with the color green.
  • For the line serving Scottsdale I used Brown since it is less of a Hispanic area.
  • My line serving Chandler Blvd/Williams Field/Power was assigned the color Pink due to being mostly a politically conservative area, thus a likely lower than average gay population.
  • I used Gold in lieu of Yellow since it would serve Mekong Plaza.
  • Silver, Orange, and Purple are completely random.
As for the political correctness of the colors, what inspired this idea for me was due to the controversy surrounding the Yellow Line in Atlanta, since that line served Atlanta's Asian-American communities and had to be renamed the Gold Line. We don't want a repeat of that here in the Phoenix area.

Then don't use colors.

As long as they are not offensive to the demographic in the areas that they serve, what is the problem then? Chicago has 8 colored lines and nobody has been offended, and they seem to be pretty lucky with their line color assignments, even if unintentional. Chicago's Brown Line mostly serves white neighborhoods, the Pink Line doesn't serve a gayborhood, and the Red Line doesn't serve a reservation. The only one that comes close is their Yellow Line, which serves Skokie, a city with a significant, though not majority Asian-American population, however, still nobody has been offended.

If the name of a rail line is a color and someone gets offend they havey bigger issues. This should faux outrage is out of control and everything doesn't need to be sanitized. As to your poll you didn't put a who cares option.

Honestly, until there is more than ONE light rail line in the valley, I wouldn't worry so much about fancy naming.
