If he is ranting about suicide, call the police. My friend was recently able to get a 4 day hold on someone because there was a suicide letter. That was proof that she was a danger to herself, so the police took her to the hospital. If the police witness someone making suicidal threats, they have to take them in to the hospital.

Otherwise, your friend needs to move and be done with the situation. You cannot help an addict who doesn't want help. Believe me. I have several addicts in my circle. It's heartbreaking to love them, but you can't help them. They have to want help.

No one can be helped with something like this, ultimately, until he wants to be. A temporary hospital stay/evaluation/counseling due to a suicide threat might help this person get on the right track, but not unless he wants to.
