seems to me the 101 is (WAS!) awesome except for rush hours, and one lane will do nothing to help with that. Meanwhile we suffer...and suffer...and suffer.

I think it's still fine except rush hour, I went 80-85 on it the whole way from Tempe through Scottsdale this morning. The Southern portion is complete and nice.

I get owned by rocks every-time I drive it and the road is so rutted that I have a hard time staying in my lane if in the center lane, which tends to be my lane of choice since both 50 mph in the right lane and 80+ in the fast lane are both ridiculous traffic flows to me. I'm a 70-75, depending on flow kind of guy, unless I'm towing, than it's 65-70.

Once it's done hopefully it will be worth it. Although, and perhaps this is due to the process the ADOT contractors use to lay highway, they become washboards really fast anyway. Ride any freeway in town. Aside from any potholes, you'll notice a firm bump-bump-bump-bump the whole time you drive on it, from a 2 inch wide horizontal line running over the whole highway every 5 feet or so. Pretty shoddy construction. These are the worst freeways that I have ever regularly traveled (minus the section of Hwy 52 built over an old landfill in San Diego, You literally catch air there.). and it's a shame since I'm also referring to very new freeways like the 202.

It's not the process that ADOT contractors use, it's the rubberized asphalt that ADOT refuses to give up. The life cycle of rubberized asphalt is terrible. Freeways go from looking shiny and new to worn out, rutted, faulted, and washboard within the space of several years. Our freeways are designed to look pretty, but are not very functional. Concrete surfaces, similar to what is found throughout urban freeways in California and Texas and even local freeways like the 143 and the 303 between the 17 and Happy Valley Rd are loud and not that pretty, but they last.

Hopefully the widening of the 101 will have some impact, but I doubt it. If a freeway flows better after it's widened, it'll just fill up after people who use other routes decide to use the freeway because it's now a faster option.

Some of the newer freeways made of concrete are grooved vertically with tire tread so they cut down on noise and reduce hydroplanes when it rains.

I'm all for the project. If you do nothing, traffic will only get worse due to the lack of fast and cheap public transportation, the size of the metro area, and a growing population.

If you want to know what real suffering is like, try taking the freeways on Fridays at 5:00PM in LA, now that's real suffering.

Only problem is the lack of foresight/money to have it originally built like this
