I have thought about moving to Phoenix and being from Toronto, people always say 'you won't handle the heat' and my usual reply is that I was born and lived in a city in the middle east where it is not uncommon to go over 45 C for long stretches in the summer. I also tell them that everytime I go to Vegas, it is usually in late June and early July, where it is the hottest (around 110 F)

So that got me thinking lately: which city is generally hotter. Vegas or Phoenix? I know the latter is a large metropolitan city and the temps may be different from one part to another. But for the sake of simplicity, let us compare the core of the two cities.

I know with all the weather data available online, it should be easy to do this comparison. And after some research, I finally found the answer, that may be obvious to some of you already: Phoenix is the hotter city. Using a website that has data for 'Large US cities where the temperature most often climbs to 100 °F (37.8 °C) or higher.' , here is the breakdown:

1-Phoenix, Arizona 107 days per year of 100 °F (37.8 °C) or higher.
2-Las Vegas, Nevada 70 days per year of 100 °F (37.8 °C) or higher.

see the full list here: https://www.currentresults.com/Weath...est-cities.php

So while Las Vegas is very hot, Phoenix is a lot hotter. The latter has almost one month or more of 100 °F weather than Vegas does.

For anyone that has lived in both cities for an extensive period of time (at least a year or more) is the heat between the two cities noticeable enough? For the record, I have never been to Phoenix (or AZ as a whole) but have been to Vegas multiple times, always in late june and early july.

This is pretty common knowledge. Vegas is also colder in the winter.

In the middle of summer they are about the same, but Phoenix has more days year-round over 100 °F.

Yes, over a month of those more than Vegas, and for me, that is a long time and easily makes Phoenix the hotter city.

I understand this may be very obvious to some people already, but this website I quoted makes it easier to see than to just hear people making the general statement that 'Phoenix is hotter than Vegas'

Phoenix: 1,086 feet above sea level.

Las Vegas: 2,001 feet above sea level.

Might play a role.

I completely disagree... If you are talking the "middle of the summer", every degree over 110 is noticeable, 108 is not "about the same" as 111

The problem with OP's list is it shows days for temps over 100 degrees, and not 110.

Also

Phoenix: Sonoran Desert

Las Vegas: Mojave Desert

hence the warmer summers in Phoenix and colder winters in Las Vegas.

In the middle of July, there are several days where Vegas is hotter than Phoenix since they aren't as affected by the monsoon as we are, so you can have a day where it is 102 and humid in Phoenix while 111 and sunny and drier in Las Vegas

All it takes is 2 minutes worth of research to see that PHX is hotter in summer and winter than Vegas. Nothing new. Vegas also gets occasional snow.
