So everytime I tell people this they look at me or think i'm stupid. I hear people say or term it "scaryvale". which I don't think maryvale is scary at all. People always tell me its full pf crack houses and blight. I don't find that to be much of the case. I think the west side and maryvale is totally underated, and I certainly don't call it "ghetto" at all. to be honest, I would prefer to live on the west side in maryvale then the east or northeast side towards Scottsdale or arcadia etc. I like the west side Hispanic vibe and culture. I don't [refer much of the suburban scottsdle feel ( I promise I'm not bashing Scottsdale at all). I also don't prefer arcadia as much. i'm a young 20's white male who describes himself as "hipster" and "artsy" and likes to live where the culture or vibe is different from what I come from. and I like to live in places where people are different from me( I like to try something new).

just thought I would share my thoughts on maryvale and even some few other areas on the west side.

What do you guys think of maryvale?

Grew up around it, I have family in the area, it's not somewhere I'd live. But it's not like I dislike it, I just wouldn't live there.

It certainly has crack houses and blight, and more than most of the City, but it's not exclusively that.

I'm not huge on Scottsdale either, but I won't argue it's a nice place.

When my grandmother first moved here from Berlin she found home in Maryville, she moved away a while ago but it's so funny to hear how she speaks about it, seems like the neighborhood has changed quite a bit. I personally really don't like maryvale, reminds me of Tuscon. Glad you like it though, hopefully it sees a rebirth.

Would you send your kids to Trevor Browne HS or Carl Hayden HS or Alhambra? I wouldn't. Maryvale isn't the worst neighborhood in the valley but it certainly isn't the best and it's far from artsy, hipster or quaint.

lol i don't even know what Trevor Browne HS or Carl Hayden HS is or ive never heard of the schools. but like what you said, i would not prefer to raise kids there either, but if others would then that's good also. i just really like the Hispanic culture and vibe to it. same goes with the south side.

also, i have a question, if anyone knows please help. what Hispanic ethnic are most people in the west and south side? ( like are they Mexican, Colombian, Honduran etc...) and do most of the hispanics in those areas come from those Latin American countries or are most of them from phoenix( natively) or do they come from other states/cities like a lot of people in phoenix do?

In general, they'll be American- or Mexican-born, and of both groups the majority are Mexican-Americans. A fair number of American-born Latino people here are born outside of the state, as are many people not of Latino ancestry. I could be mistaken, but I believe the largest Latino group in this town after Mexican is Guatemalan. To be honest, if that research exists it's so esoteric and so few people care about it that it's not likely going to be published in much media, because it wouldn't get many readers. I think if you have the chance to explore it, one of the libraries at ASU will more than likely have that kind of information in print form.

A good chunk of our Mexican population is from Sonora and Michoacan specifically.

Apart from Maryvale specifically, just wanted to take a second to thank you for being an accepting person and for your positive outlook on the cultura Mexicana. Saludos!
