I just saw something I've never seen before. A beat-up car pulled up in front of my neighbor's house. My neighbor had put palm fronds out on the curb in anticipation of bulk trash day. Two people got out of the car, collected the palm fronds, awkwardly tied them to the trunk of the car, and then drove away. I'm used to people scavenging items like scrap metal and corrugated cardboard from the curb. Those materials have value. I'm at a loss, however, to understand how palm fronds, which are usually viewed as a waste management nuisance, could be worth enough to make them worth scavenging? I know one person's trash can be another's treasure, but I'm puzzled by this one. Any ideas?

Yep, many people have these by their pool areas...

Or they're practicing for going on the 'Survivor' reality show.

I have people come by every year and ask if they can trim some fronds off of my palm for Palm Sunday. Always very polite and its cute when they trim off small ones for the kids.

I've asked one or two of my neighbors for that very thing, too. Doesn't explain why these fronds get taken, but in the right time of year, it would.

Maybe they are local artisans that use the fronds to weave baskets, purses, wallets or other items. Is there a palm frond pinterest page? While the frond itself might be "worthless", if it is made into something that could be sold, then it might be quite valuable to an artisan.

I've seen people use them as decor also, which got me wondering how long these stupid things last after they are cut off the tree? I guess a long time since some people use them as roofing material.

I'd say thats a good guess, and exactly what I was thinking.
