Hi there! My husband & I are looking at moving to Phoenix later this year from Seattle. We were wondering if there was a smoking ban in public places in the PHX area (as there are in NY, LA, and here in WA). If not, has it been on a ballot in previous years or is there active legislation to vote on it again?

Proposition 201, passed in 2006, went into effect May 1, 2007 throughout Arizona. The law prohibits smoking in all workplaces, including bars and restaurants with lounges. Smoking is allowed on patios outside of these establishments, but owners must get a permit from the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control to add patios. The agency plans to contract with county health departments to do compliance inspections on the smoking ban as part of regular health inspections.

Around 18% of the adult population of Arizona smokes.

Yes we've had a ban on smoking for quite some time now and it's been wonderful.

The Indian reservations still allow you to smoke in their bars and casinos. Cigarettes are also cheaper there because they don't have the state taxes that support Mrs. Basha's early childhood programs.

It's funny how carefully this question was asked. Can't determine whether they're looking for a positive or a negative answer. Some of us smokers annoy me when they're being apologetic.

I wouldn't think state and local laws would apply to Indian reservations or federal installations.
