Interesting question and even more interesting responses . . .

I consider owning a pool very similar to owning a boat and believe me, I have been there with both . . . happy when they come into our lives but even happier when they leave.

After the novelty wears off, just too much work, money and grief compared to the amount of enjoyment.

I second what Bummer mentions. In addition, based on my observations in living in 2 different cities/neighborhoods in the valley and knowing several of the neighbors with pools, most pools sit unused/used very little. Again, doesn't mean this will be you but the odds seem to favor many people tire/don't use pools much though there are exceptions of course. It was mentioned about how hot the water gets in the summer in the pool and that's certainly true. While I like warm water, swimming in 90+ water(which your pool will easily rise to) when trying to cool off in July/August just doesn't cut it for me.

Private vs public, it depends what kind of personality you are. Some like to hang out with a bunch of people swimming/lounging. Some like privacy. Perhaps a suggestion.....buy a house with no pool in a community with a public pool and use it for a while. If you like using the public pool, you're good! If you don't/get sick of it, then a private pool isn't for you and you can do something perhaps more worthwhile in your backyard. If you love the public pool but want more privacy and feel it's worth having for years, put in your own pool. That's more expensive than buying an existing pool in a home but I think one loses if they have a hole of water in their backyard and don't use it.

The above 2 posts are pretty much right on. My son and family have a heated pool in Glendale and they used to use it nearly all year around. But as the kids grew older and other interests came about the pool is now more or less a nuisance and still costly to maintain. Most people I know who have a pool say they enjoyed it the first 2 or 3 years as a novelty then it was a pain to have afterwards.

Have lived in Phoenix since the 70s, 3 different homes, have always had a pool. Pool services are a waste of money if you have time to take care of it yourself, which doesn't take much. We end up using it a couple of times a week, pretty much Memorial Day to Labor Day.

I feel like community pools are a 50/50. Last time I visited a community pool there was feces in it (yes, a kid did #2). So I'm a little skeptical of community pools. Now, if the community wasn't say, filled with kids (think of like condos in an area like Roosevelt Row or Tempe, retirement neighborhoods, etc.) then I think a community pool would be even better than a private pool. Pools are fairly expensive and with a community pool even if you used it every day, it isn't on you to pay for the maintenance. You pitch in some money, along with the rest of the people in your building/neighborhood, and get to reap all the benefits. I'd argue you'd save money, but since condos/apartments generally throw in pool fees with other fees (like maintaining the landscaping and hallways, etc.) it's hard to tell how much a month or so you are paying for specifically the pool. I think you'd still end up in the green though and you don't have to put in the maintenance again I cannot stress that enough.

Now, if you ARE going to be in a neighborhood that is very family-friendly, kids tend to pee and poop in pools so I'd opt for the private pool, lol.

So true. We live in CA bay area. Have a pool, and a BOAT. Your comparison is true. First 5 yrs or so, no problem, then it seems more like chore. Don't get me wrong, I love both, but the pool is getting used less, and less.

We are going to relocate to AZ. in the next 6 months. Looking for a place with a pool, not deal breaker without, but would like to have one just the same.

I have been reading these forums for a couple years, interesting info.

If you don't heat your pool, it's generally usable from about May 20th to September 30th most years, after Sept 15th, pool temps drop like a rock, usually to below 80° by Oct 1st and below 70° before Halloween

I have both a pool and boat. Jet skis and motorcycle too and EVERTHING gets used often.
I built some solar heaters and with the help of a solar cover, I keep my pool well into the 80's typically from mid March well into November. Maintaining a pool is VERY simple and inexpensive with a little knowledge.

Not quite so short. I used my pool reliably from late April into early October. The water warms up nicely well before May 20.
