Hello All,
I am thinking of relocating , I have a Computer Engineering Degree and I am looking go to a affordable tech savy city with a great job market and culture. How does Phoenix, Az compare to Austin, TX? I know Austin is a tech mecca, Is Phoenix also considered a tech mecca? How is the Tech job market in Phoenix? How is the racial diversity in Phoenix ? Do Blacks, Whites and Hispanics all get along fine? Does Phoenix have any race problems? In Austin I saw many interracial relationships and things. Do you see lots of this in Phoenix? Also, Is Arizona still considered the most conversative state? Or is Phoenix as Liberal these days as Austin? |

For tech jobs, I think you'd do much better in Austin. Austin is MUCH more liberal than Phoenix (although traditionally Texas is also a very conservative state). There aren't too many black in Phoenix (don't know about Austin). There are plenty of Hispanics in both, although I believe the recent enactment of tougher immigration laws may have many illegals vacating Arizona (or so I've read).

Ok, here's the skinny: As for the tech industry I believe Austin would be slightly better. I have friends who work in the tech industry here and they do well, but are always looking for opportunities elsewhere. As for the race issue, when I moved here nine years ago the black population was 2.9% in the entire state! I believe the new figures will reveal a significant increase in that population, but it is still relatively low. Race problems? Yeah there are as many here as anywhere else, but you notice many interacial couples and families across the board. There are a lot of conservative values here, but if you are in Tempe that changes because of the university. All in all the valley is not a bad place to live if you don't mind higher than average housing prices and ever-growing traffic issues. Oh, and forget about a quick trip to the beach. But the mountains are wonderful.
