Not this is not terribly NEW information - but nice article about how the Phoenix area has once again become a hotbed for LA/Orange County transplants.

Leaving coastal California is a 'no-brainer' for some as housing costs rise - LA Times

Haha yeah, that's a tough one at face value. But, think of all the money they're saving on cost of living, real estate and state taxes.

I wonder if there is any data to suggest that SoCal transplants subconsciously (or consciously) tend to pick the West side because it's closer to where they came from. If you're driving in from LA/OC to look at homes and communities I think there would be some natural bias to the West side just because those are the first ones they're going to see.

You'd think they'd be happier in a more liberal state, say, Maryland or New York.

Welcome to what TX, CO, and MA have suffered from for years.

In they pour, attracted by the fact that (at least initially) you can buy a house that isn't a shack for a price that people who actually work for a living can afford.

They pay above asking price for all your houses and drive up all the prices.

Then they take root, constantly complaining about how everything isn't as wonderful as it was back in California.

Then they start lobbying for expansion of state services so things can be more like they were "back home in California, where everything was so perfect that we left", and so your state's tax revenue vs. expenditure commitment balance can be as well-managed as California's.

Pretty soon people are paying $5 for a slice of toast but the people who have lived there all their lives can't afford to buy a nice house.

Quick, stock up on the 55 gallon drum size of "Californian-Be-Gone" before it's too late.

We are from the same area and relocating for a job, though we actively looked for a job in the PHX area hoping to get a better offer there. We did, and we did not even stop in the West Valley when house hunting. Then again we have kids and schools were a priority, so we started our search in the East Valley. The rental market almost pushed us out to look at the west valley, and I'm not gonna lie shaving 45 minutes to an hour off the trip back home to grandma's house with kids is appealing, but good schools won out for us.
And yes, HB to anywhere in PHX is ouch. But we aren't beach people so living in a tourist destination every day of our lives just gets old. It's beautiful, and we have virtually no bugs/pests to worry about ever. But that's not enough to keep us there paying a ridiculous amount for tiny housing.

And for the record... people have been "pouring in" to California since the Hollywood sign went up, hoping for a perfect life, their big break, a better job, or a beautiful view. We don't spray people with Be Gone here ;-)

OC and SD County tend to lean a little conservative. But also, maybe they're like me and don't identify with either party and are able to choose where they live based on other criteria.

Pretty much. We didn't give a second thought to political affiliation when looking for the right place for us. It's not something that drives our day to day lives though. Life is what you make it!

One thing to note is: most (if not all) are moving against their will. Not because they want to.

If LA/OC were to plop down scores of skyscrapers that increases the density and supply of housing which drops prices, you bet that couple would move back and so will many others. Or hell, some currently in AZ will even consider moving to the area.. Just shows how desirable it is.
