Personally I think Chandler (and the rest of the East Valley for that matter, including Mesa, Gilbert, et al) are over-rated. As best I can determine, it's one big grid, with strip mall after strip mall after fast food joint after car dealership after strip mall after big box store after fast food joint.
I have no idea what the big deal is about the East Valley (except for maybe the pleasant farm smells), but the real estate agents on this board who all live there seem to adore it.
I think there are only a few truly special family-oriented communities in the Valley in the $300k-$1m range. They include DC Ranch in Scottsdale (the priciest of them--you'll be hard-pressed to find a decent single family for under $750k in DCR), Verrado in Buckeye (both DCR and Verrado are DMB developments--first class all the way) and Anthem in the north.

Chandler is a good city. East Valley is different than the West Valley; same thing for the North Valley vs the rest of the Valley. You get different demographics, stores, and schools. Drive around the area. Stop. Get out of the car. Take a deep breath. How do you feel about the area? Good? Then it is right for you. Bad? Find another place to live. That simple.

Is Chandler good or bad? Yes, it is.
It's too large a city to lump it all into a good or bad category. Some neighborhoods are still predominately lower class, high crime areas, but these are mostly in the areas surrounding downtown. Since the 1990s, Chandler has worked hard at becoming one of the nicer places to live in the valley and has for the most part, succeeded.

Im not a real estate agent and I LOVE the east valley. When I moved down to AZ in 2004 I didn't know anybody down here or where to live and I just lucked out and by chance ended up in Gilbert. It was like a utopia coming from where I was living (and no I don't watch Nascar). I soon after discoved Chandler and I would happily live in either one. I live in Chandler because my wife works in Tempe. I have lived in a lot of places and I have spent time in every state and every major city in the US (except Alaska and very far out parts of the NE) And if I could live anywhere it would be Chandler/Gilbert/S. Tempe/Ahwatukee/and even the sliver of Mesa south of the US60 or only if you have the coin PV. Just my humble opinion. Very low crime, decent schools, sunshine, friendly people, good road system....what more could you want?

Chandler has good and "bad" areas. I prefer south chandler.
Also not a real estate agent and I wouldn't live anywhere in AZ but the east valley.

I live in West Chandler, between the 10 and the 101 -- there are stores and restaurants within minutes. There are plenty of parks. The 'old town' on Arizona Avenue is wonderfully rebuilt and revitalized. The 202 takes you anywhere fast.
I couldn't think of a better location to operate from in the entire Valley -- of course, I'm biased.
Also, the best kept secret here is the existence of the Wild Horse SHERATON. Don't tell anyone! And, actually it's address isn't even Chandler.
