Local temps vary. You can feel it just walking around. Go by an irrigated field and it's cooler and more humid. Figure it this way. In '90, when the official temp was 122 or so that was at the airport. The temps around the valley may have been +/- 5°. So if the official temp is 115, then even if it is 120 where you're at it probably still doesn't beat that day.

BTW: when I went home yesterday, the local station near my house said 117, several others within a few miles showed everything from 110 to 123.

Where they place them matters and some placings are completely nuts like next to a busy highway where vehicle heat, pavement heat etc all raise temps.

There was a big article written about where the National Weather Service placed it's stations and how incorrect some/many were. I just can't find it right at the moment...

Oh please... that IS my point. There are laws that control all sorts of things, yet those things still happen. The same people who want less gubmint and less restriction and more freedoms on one hand want moar laws and control on the other.

This is really just about blaming people, not about preventing anything. Every year it's the same thing. An angry mob of overheated, whiny Phonecians with pitchforks and torches trying to figure out how to get someone.

Actually, at least on here the idea is that those that decide to do something like hike in extreme temps or without taking obvious and well advertised precautions should have to pay for said decision should it result in a rescue instead of the tax paying public just like the "Stupid Motorist" law.

I don't have a real problem with that idea, do you?

I think it's dumb to impose one's physical limitations on to others. I'm 42 and most 30 year old men wouldn't be able to keep up with me hiking, biking or running, etc. You also have to have someone put a sign at the trailhead much like they put barricades in front of a road that is impassable. I don't like a government donut eater deciding my physical limitations.
