Why do homes in Phoenix have concrete fences? I am from NY and we don't have many fences.

Why not? They hold up much better then wood fences.

At first I didn't like that but here.. we have wood and the wood dries and cracks in the sun, and doesn't allow for as much privacy.

I'm guessing the heat and privacy are the biggest reasons.

Well they are called "Block walls" and are very effective at creating some privacy in the back yard. Wood would need to be replaced every few years, but with no freeze/thaw cycles block walls will last seemingly forever.

We used to have wooden fences but they would fall over and need repair a lot of the time. Remember, we have extreme heat that wears wood out quickly!

I remember the fights we would have with our neighbor about the fence falling. It would land in his yard and he said it wasn't his responsibility. We eventually replaced all sides with concrete and no more worries.

A block fence also acs as a sound barrier . another plus is that a good percentage of homes have pools in yard and that keeps neighbor kids out .

Hi Gloria:

Your town in NY may be an older community that was built before fences were popular. What are the newer developments in your area like, do they have fences?

I love the fences! I remember the first time I visited my husbands home town in Georgia, none of the homes in subdivsions had fences! They were just open. I couldn't understand that...what if you have a dog and just want to let them out? What about privacy?

I really enjoy the block fences. Not having them seems so strange to me.

Absolutely! Losing the walls and the privacy is one of the negatives that one has to consider when moving from Phoenix (and other western cities) to the east.

They make them from concrete in south Florida too. What I don't like is when they surround the entire yard, even the front. To me it's like seeing burglar bars, it gives the perception of high crime in the area even if there is not. Here in Alabama sometimes whole subdivisions will have decorative brick walls surrounding them, but rarely around individual yards (wood is used as dividers).
