My neighbor has had his water heater replaced 3 times since I replaced mine which has lasted 10 years now I only flush it once every 4 years the only difference is he has a water softener we do not have one I always thought water softeners make water heaters last longer seems to be the other way around.

A standard 50 gallon gas heater is about $500~ish for just the heater now. The energy requirements were changed a few years back to require additional insulation & the manufacturers used that as an excuse to jack the prices. I've installed Bradford-white, AO smith & rheem/Ruud heaters & can't tell much difference between any of them. The Bradford white was made in Michigan, so I kinda thought that was nice, but they're kinda jerks about DIY installation, and I haven't had much luck with plumbers doing installs any "cleaner" than my own, so that's a turn-off. Whirlpool sold some gas heaters with ignition problems through Home Depot, and I think the brand was dumped by the depot for that reason. I love heat-pumps for electric applications, but if you've got gas, use gas.

FYI, the depot and lowes both offer inexpensive in-home extended warranties on heaters (around $69 for ten years) , personally, I'd be looking at buying there & getting a handyman to install. Both stores nail you hard if you use their installers.
Man, isn't that the truth! I was looking into a replacement and while their tank prices were okay the install was the same or more than the tank cost was.
I'm sorry but $600 to install a water heater is insane in my book...

$600 is crazy for an hour of work that's what gets me with plumbing contractors I understand people need to make a living but at $600 an hour.

I had a pipe break under my concrete slab and to get it re-piped though my addict they wanted $3500 that didn't include any dry wall repair just tear the walls open install new pipes and leave. I ended up doing the same re-pipe myself over a weekend for $300.
