Perhaps a little more maturity on your part would help you sound a little less like a gang banger teenager

reneeedgerton is on a distinguished road
My husband and I plan to move to Tuscon in 2011. I am early 50 and he is early 60. We both look and act much younger. We are fairly outgoing and love outdoor sports. So thanks for your comment. Sheba bath

Phx has more culture than where I live on the East Coast and is a lot more shall we say open minded. I am aiming my compass that way as soon as I save up enough dinero. Until then keep dreaming on!

But the city itself (as opposed to the natural beauty surrounding it) doesn't have a whole lot that is *distinct* or unique or an underlying sense of its own identity.

It's a heady concept and a heady complaint, but when you look around a notice that (with a few exceptions) every part of the city looks *exactly the same* as every other part it's hard not to be left yawning....
I agree and disagree. I think Phoenix has an identity. I call it a Utopian/Metropolis identity. Yes, we lack the history that other well established cities have. However, in doing so, we have created this science fiction artificial cutting edge quality to this city that most cities lack. Phoenix is a city that could be found in a comic book. Our roads and highways are pristine. All of our buildings are new. We have speed cameras on the freeways. Everyone drives nice cars. The homes are all new, comtemporary and beautiful. We have 300 days of sunshine and clear skies. We have every store, restaurant etc and they are all brand new; even a McDonalds in Phoenix looks nicer than most dives in Boston or New Orleans. The people look beautiful. I could go on. Cities with a lot of culture have old buildings, and streets. They have poor weather. The quality of life is harder in those cities. The cost of living in those cities is higher. In that sense, we do have an identity however artificial and "new" our cultural identity may be. Yes, you can criticize it and call it materialistic or artificial but those of us who enjoy it, call utopian and cutting edge. This is why people love Phoenix is because it has this irreverant attitude toward history and culture and prefers convenience, materialism and comfort. And that's why you have this constant battle on this forum. People who live here and are sick of that want to leave. However, you have people who live in cities with great culture yet great inconvenience that no longer feel that culture is worth the poor quality of living.
