Hi there, I am new to this forum. I have lived in Rocky Point for years and would be happy to offer any insights and information to anyone considering visiting or moving here.
I read all the previous posts and had myself a nice laugh at some of the comments (this is much more than a spring break town, by the way).
Well, let me know if you need any information from my new home town.

When I think of Rocky Point, I think of Thugs. Sorry............

I agree with Rosie, I think many of the stories about Rocky Point and Mexico are stretching the truth or the other side is Many Americans check their brains at the border.
It sounds like you had a negative experience. I am sorry for that. Unfortunately there are bad elements everywhere. I am a middle aged woman who has lived here for 5 years and can go anywhere day or night without feeling threatened. I feel safer here than I have in many parts of the U.S. However it does sadden me when I hear that someone has been mistreated in Rocky Point.
Rocky Point is a spring break town. I went there in 2001 the countryside is godforsakenly ugly and you are definately reminded that you are in Mexice but it seemed pretty safe; as for the experience.
I think it was typical of any small mexican town. The view of the ocean was nice, we went and saw some sandunes. I just remember it was annoying being harrassed every five minutes to buy something.
All in all I would say ehh.. it was ok but I think you would have more fun in a popular place like cancun.
It's changed a lot since 2001. Back then, most of the high rise condos on the beach were not even built, they were in their initial stages of development or their were still bids on properties.
Initially, it was a dirty little Spring Break town for the Arizona kids so it didn't matter if it was developed since all they cared about was getting booze, clubbing and going to the beach. Since the early 2000's, Rocky Point has tried to attract the adult crowd by offerring more more hotels, condos, restaurants and yes pharmacies.
I agree that Rocky Point can't compare to places like Cancun in regards to development but Rocky Point has made a lot of progress in the last 6 years and it's becoming a legitimate vacation spot as opposed to a little hideway for Spring Breakers.
It was definitely safe and much safer than Cancun and some of the other Spring Break towns because it had a small town appeal. There are a lot of local police there so I never felt threatened by "thugs" or anything remotely resembling that. And it's a big joke among college kids because they will pull you over for 20 dollar bribes and it's just the norm there. It's really close as well. If you live in Tempe or south of it, you can get to Rocky Point in 3.5 hours. The problem with Rocky Point wasn't safety but rather a lack of development and boredom. If you are wanting to impress your girlfriend or fiance, you take them to Cabo not Rocky Point. If you are 23 years old and you and your buddies want to get drunk and go off-roading in the sand dunes, you go to Rocky Point.
In terms of prices, you don't go to Mexico to save money. This is a big misperception among Americans. They think they can go to Mexico and save money on excursions like renting waverunners, boating etc. In fact, it can be more expensive. The only thing that is really cheaper in Mexico are the hotel rooms but aside from that, the booze and activities cost you more. Of course, there are ways to save money on food and liquor but if you are dining at the nice places, it's going to cost you more. You go to Rocky Point to experience a different environment and culture not to save money

How is it to take small kids for a "beach vacation", to swim, boogie board, build sand castles, that sort of thing? Any worthwhile snorkeling there? Can you buy decent fresh seafood there to cook back in your condo? Anything else for small kids to do there?
Rocky Point is a "White Trash Riviera". They market the place as if it were a 5 star relaxing spa atmosphere, but I would give it three stars, and say that Rocky Point is a perfect flace for guys with lifted trucks who like to get drunk... There is no cultural aspect of the town. I asked around if there was a local museum, everybody laughed at me... Only tequila, shrimp, and dust in Rocky Point.
Dude, it's Mexico, how many times do people go to Cancun inquiring about museums? I would have laughed at you too. Let's be honest, whether you are rich or poor, you don't go to Rocky Point or any other Mexican beach destination for fine cultural escapes. You go there for the basics: beach, beer, margarita, water sports...it's pretty simple.
That being said, I can't disagree with your description either. When I first went there a LONG time ago, it was a white trash Mexican Riviera. I went with friends and we just wanted to get trashed and have fun. We were in our mid to low 20's and we don't have lifted trucks or anything but yeah, there were a lot of guys there with lifted trucks LOL. I went again last year, it was a completly different experience. You are right though, there is still a much of that white trash influence but you can see there are some spas and a movement to make it more "Scottsdale-Mexico" Some people hate that and feels it will lose it's charm but its also true that a lot of Phoenix residents have avoided Rocky Point in the past because its too underdeveloped. Now that there has been a concerted effort to make it nicer, it's becoming less white trash and more people are visiting it.

Yes, all of that can be had but the town is still underdeveloped and thus not organized well enough that you can just pop in and figure out where all of these excursions are. You need to speak or ask people who have done these and which companies offer them etc. I would PM LondonBarcelona. Sounds like he has done this. I never took my kids there.

I can't just pop in and figure out where a beach is? Look at my list again. Swimming, sandcastle building, boogie boarding, snorkeling. They're just simple beach activities. Are the beaches kid-friendly for these sorts of activities? That's all I'm asking. Thanks.

Yeah, but I'm assuming you want beaches that aren't laced with sharp rocks and water that doesn't have jellyfish everywhere.
