Hi everyone, my family and I will be moving to the Phoenix area in the next couple of months. My work is in East Phoenix and would like to have a commute of no more than 45 min. We have two young children so good elementary schools and safety is a top priority. We plan on renting first until we get to know the area more and have a $2000/mo budget. We'd ideally like a single family home with a pool. We were looking at Scottsdale, Cave Creek, Ahwatukee, and Surprise. I know the commute is longer but you seem to get so much more for your money in the Surprise area. Any insights you can share would be much appreciated!

I would recommend Tempe. You're not going to want to commute from Surprise to that part of Phoenix, its suicide. Chandler would be another recommendation. Plus, Surprise is hideously boring. Scottsdale will be good, too, but your money doesn't go as far there, but its probably the best suburb in terms of entertainment and safety.

The good news about Surprise is the roads and freeways have improved and your access to Phoenix has improved. The downside- the commute from Surprise to East Phoenix would definitely be greater than 45 minutes if you have to be at work between 7-9am. Traffic headed eastbound on i-10, north bound on the 101, or southbound on the 17 can be brutal and you could truly be pushing an hour+ commute each day depending on where you work is located. Cavecreek or even houses for rent in 85024 would be a good choice to stay within budget and not be too far out. Both also feed into great schools. If you have any other questions. Feel free to message me.

Surprise to east Phoenix will be an agonizing commute. Taking away from time spent with your family to spend three hours a day in your car is not worth it, more value for your money or not. You will do fine somewhere like Ahwatukee, the schools are good there, lots of amenities close by. No need to go all the way to Queen Creek, either, for the same reasons as Surprise.

First, congrats on your upcoming move. I'm a mass native and we have lived out hear for nearly 20 years. You are correct, your money will get you more in Surprise but as others have said it would be an awfully long commute. You may want to check out Tempe, Chandler or maybe even Gilbert. Your budget will give you quite a few options, depending on the area. Scottsdale is nice, but pricy and Cave Creek is pretty remote and far north. Ahwatukee is not a bad option.

Have you ever been to Phoenix?

Cross out Surprise and Cave Creek from your wish list. As others have said, those areas would be too far of a commute.
Consider Gilbert or Chandler instead. $2K per month will rent you a nice house, even one with a pool and a yard.

Too far, assuming you want a life outside of working and commuting. What will be your general cross streets for work?

Another area you could look at is in Phoenix proper, east of 40th St between Thomas and Camelback. Right near work, but in the Scottsdale Unified School District, and Arcadia HS is considered one of the better public high schools in the Valley

South Tempe or Chandler would be my choices, both are safe suburban, family-friendly areas with good schools.

Traffic is going to be a headache no matter where you live but someplace like Surprise, Cave Creek, or anywhere on the far eastern side of the MSA would be a much longer commute.

See my post for the contrary...
