I am moving from Virginia and am looking for the best school districts near Scottsdale. Can someone please give me some specifics? I have applied to Scottsdale and Pleasant Valley. What about Chandler? I am looking to teach in a more affluent area with a lot of parental involvement and higher tests scores on achievement tests. I am not being biased, I am just looking for a new group of kids to teach, as I have been teaching "at risk" kids for awhile.
I look forward to hearing some of your thoughts on where this is in Phoenix!! |

In addition to those you have mentioned, I suggest the following districts:
Kyrene -- Tempe and southeast Phoenix Madison -- North Central Phoenix Gilbert |

As a HS teacher who is moving to Phoenix from the midwest this summer, and just landed a job in the valley, here's what I can tell you:
the salaries vary widely...and the "nice" affluent districts pay the least. Glendale schools have an excellent reputation and some of the highest test scores, yet because their socioeconomic differences are so widespread, and their buildings are from the 1960s, they get overlooked. I had great interviews with schools in Peoria, Deer Valley, Scottsdale, and Glendale. I ended up choosing Glendale. I found the Paradise Valley schools (not actually in Paradise Valley...they go to Scottsdale) to be really unimpressive. Good luck and make sure you know what you're getting into...I've spent four years with affluent rich kids who drive BMWs to school and that's the last group I want to see for awhile (read: Scottsdale...) |

Peoria is a great district. It's one of the reasons why we chose Peoria. And, I know our district is hiring. God's blessings to you!

Now if I worked in Peoria could I still live in Scottsdale? I am completely unfamiliar so please don't laugh!

Peoria is quite a drive from Scottsdale, so I wouldn't recommend living in one community and working in another.... but, then again, people DO it! Do a map search of Phoenix and surrounding suburbs and you'll see the distance between the different 'burbs. I live in Mesa but teach in Gilbert, and my work is only 10 minutes from my home.

From north Scottsdale, it would be a feasible commute via the 101 Freeway. The farther south in Scottsdale, the longer the commute would be. Keep in mind that Scottsdale is 30 miles from top to bottom, so the critical question is always "Where in Scottsdale?"

Thank you, I will look up the map...I am uneasy about this 101 Freeway from what I have read. Everyone has nothing but traffic nightmares to share...
Also, what about the Chandler school district?? Is Gilbert a better district or is it basically a school by school basis? |

If you got a job in Peoria, I would recommend living in northern Peoria or northern Glendale. There are some really nice developments and homes there that are equivalent to ones you would find in Scottsdale. Best wishes!

Check out Cave Creek Unified. Great schools, great teachers, and wouldn't be a far commute.
