Chandler is part of Metro-Phoenix, so you've got more in the way of 'things to do' and easy freeway access to pretty much everything in Phoenix, but not much left as far as rural character. Casa Grande still has some of its previous rural character because it is such a drive from Phoenix, and is a lot less expensive to live in, though it's growing quickly in population and also is known for having a crime problem.
If you do move to Casa Grande, you should check out the renovated historic Paramount Theatre: index

I have check out the area on Goolgle Earth. That is an awesome way to see the streets and where certain things are located. I want to see some pictures of the building and mountains and that kind of thing that you can't really see from an aerial view.
Can you see mountains from Casa Grande? I would love to look out the window and see mountains in the background! Also the sunsets. I have seen pictures of the Arizona sunsets, but I can't wait to be there and see them first hand. We don't have views like that here in Illinois!

If you zoom in on Google Earth (not Google Maps, they are different) then you'll see blue dots. I can see pictures of a museum, feed store, railroad depot, church, two city hall pictures and what appears to be a random building.
Here's a skyline picture of Casa Grande.
This one is a sunset picture from flickr.com.
This appears to be a school in Casa Grande, from flickr.com.
Sorry if I posted pics you've already saw

No Aldi stores here
We moved from Chicago and I remember those Aldi stores where yu got great food values. nothing quite like it here. There is Food City, mostly I think utilized by the Hispanic population, but there is one on Arizona Ave near Ray Rd in Chandler. I have never been in them. There might be one in Casa Grande or maricopa, not sure. If you use the ads that come out every week and compare prices, I think its easy to save money. O yes, there is a Costco near Chandler mall.

There is a Food City in Casa Grande in the historic part of town. I don't think their prices are any different than Basha's or Safeway though, honestly.

As many others, notably Madmike64, have noted Casa Grande is certainly changing fast. The new Dillards-anchored Mall is something those of us who have been in AZ for a few years never thought we would see in the CG area. CG was a really heavily agriculturally dominated town until just a few years ago.I have a colleague who recently moved from Avondale, West Phoenix to Casa Grande and absolutely loves the slower, more low key pace of life. He felt he got a great deal on a much larger new home for about the same as he was paying for his old Phoenix-area home.
In the field of warehousing and distribution many companies are considering Casa Grande as a future location so the town's growth looks set to continue. Great freeway access for Texas and California and cheaper than Phoenix. My business occasionally involves a trip down to see customers in the Casa Grande area and then over to see more in Maricopa. You will definitely have a no-hassle easy commute to work! Therefore I think You have probably made the right choice as someone who likes the more steady-paced lifestyle.

i like maricopa. Why not live near where you have to go every day?
my morning rush hour commute to chandler takes me 20 minutes. shorter than my boss' commute from phoenix.
There is a lot of small town feel, and growth is on its way.
Plenty of rock bottom house prices. You could probably buy a house for close to your rent range
There is very little crime, a lot of young people, growth on the way and all the conveniences of a big city 20 minutes north. You get to see the stars at night, enjoy the silence and be close to work. I couldn't think of a better place to be!

I would love to live in Maricopa, but even with the rock bottom house prices, I would not be able to afford it right now. I will be moving down there by myself, so I only have one income and it's a frist year teachers income. That doesn't go far.
I am hoping to rent for a year or two in Casa Grande and then probably buy something in Maricopa. Another reason that I want to rent is just to make sure I lilke it there. I have never really been there for an extended length of time, so I don't want to jump into buying a house and then decide six months down the road that I really don't want to stay there. I don't see that happening, but you never know what will happen.
But, from what I have researched, I definitely agree with you that Maricopa seems like a nice place to live!
