What's going on with Papago plaza on the corner of McDowell and Scottsdale Rd? Any updates as to what they are planning to do with a facelift or complete reno?

Love that the reporter doesn't know the difference between "raised" and "razed".

I haven’t been able to find any updates online. There is a notification sign on the site for a ‘neighborhood open house’ that would have occurred last month. There are no documents to date on the city of Scottsdale website related to the pre application 485-PA-14 number on the sign. Looks like the first step will be a zoning change request.

The writer AND the editor.

Hasn't Papago been moribund for years, if not decades?

Well, no, there have been several businesses in there over the last several years. It hasn't been the destination it once was for a very long time.

When they were still planning on keeping it operating with renovation, a few years ago, someone I know was encouraged by the management to relocate her business there. Fortunately, she felt more comfortable going elsewhere not far away.

I like the Santa Fe/Taos/Native American adobe look the plaza had, it was unique. I'm kinda sad to see it go, even though its not successful. It was a shopping plaza that actually embraced our region's history and architecture. Hopefully its not replaced with yet another bland, faceless building.

That is where the old HomeTown Buffet used to be, right?

Oh please. ECommerce didn't do that to Papago Plaza. Online sales only accounts for less than 20% of all retail sales (closer to 10%). Phoenix is also a shopping destination, so the effect of eCommerce would be felt less here than say San Antonio or Fresno. The investor owner spokeswoman is blaming something other than their own inability to attract quality tenants to a property that needed to be renovated (even if keeping the same look). That's a prime location and Magnuson Hotels buying the former Best Western next door probably gave them the idea to redo the property with apartments, retail and "hotel".
