I am considering relocating to Arizona from Chicago, with children in grade school and high school. One of the possibilities is a job near the Deer Valley airport. What are some suggestions as to neighborhoods around there? I want to avoid a long commute, and want to live in a community that would be good for my children without being too isolated for a single parent. I looked around the area last week, checking out some rental properties, but it's hard to get a good feel for the region by just driving by.

You have a lot of great options if you will be working in the Deer Valley airport area.

The whole Arrowhead area is a great choice. It has a mix of new build and older (older as in 1980s) but the area is very nicely kept and has a mix of local/non-chain restaurants plus your normal chains. Many of the main streets are lined with trees and also have trees/landscaping in the medians (59th Ave, 67th Ave, 75th Ave, Union Hills Dr, Deer Valley Rd). This would be my top choice...basically bound by Union Hills to the South, Hillcrest to the north, 51st Ave to the east and 75th Ave to the west.

There is also the area further north...around Happy Valley Rd...Sonoran Mountain Ranch, Stetson Valley. Then as you move toward the east (closer to the airport) you have a lot of new communities around I-17 and Happy Valley which is within 5 minutes or so of the airport.

Going east, you can look at the Desert Ridge area around the 101 and the 51 freeways, another nice new area with lots of shopping and restaurants.

Basically you're in a very good position if you will be working near the airport...really just about anywhere north of the 101 all the way from 83rd Ave to Scottsdale is a good area.

There are lots of nice areas north of the 101 or just south. I live in Anthem and like it quite alot. The community is very family and kid friendly. It can be bit isloated for high school age kids however.

It maybe hard to tell alot from driving around, but... we don't know your price points nor what type of place you are looking for.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I'd like to rent a 3 bedroom house, townhouse or condo, or two bedrooms with a loft or den that could be used as a bedroom. My price range is around $900-$1200/month.

Renting a place like that in Anthem should be easy. I know of someone renting a 3 bedroom/2 bath + den 2150 sf ft home for $1100 a month.
