Hello western friends! Hopefully I have selected the proper forum for my question. I am traveling from NC to Scottsdale the first week of October for a golf trip. We've rented an AirBnB in North Scottsdale (near Bell and Tatum) Currently, I am training for a half marathon later in the year, so I need to get in two 5 mile runs while I'm there. This is my first trip to Scottsdale and I know very little of the area.

Any recommendations on a place to run? Are there any parks where I could easily run? I'm not looking for the ultimate destination run as I'm treating this as a pretty functional workout, but I won't mind driving a short distance for a great place. Mostly if I can avoid running through intersections, I'd be happy. I noticed some kind of river or culvert that seems to border the northern part of town, but I can't really make out what it is on Google maps. Seems like it's fenced in. Is there a path along it?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If your AirBnB is near Tatum and Bell, then it's located within Phoenix -- three miles west of the Scottsdale border. In that portion of northeast Phoenix, I'd recommend Reach 11. That's probably what you've observed on Google Maps. It's a linear park with several miles of relatively smooth and flat trails that are good for running.

If you have a car, drive Hwy 51 down to Granada Park. Run along the Arizona Canal through the Biltmore Hotel area.

Or, drive over to Hayden Road and Chaparral in Scottsdale and run the Indian Bend Wash.

That is exactly the place I saw on the map. Seems like it might be perfect. Nice and close so I can get out before it gets too hot. I am super intimidated by the temperatures out there! I keep telling myself "it's a dry heat" as they say, but whoosh!

I just looked at some pics. This park is beautiful! I think I have to go there on one of my runs! Thanks!

This place looks a little too far from out house, but I've bookmarked it for the next time I get out there. Thanks for the recommendation!

It wont be too bad in October. Now, June, July, August, and September? Fuhgettaboudit.

The answer you seek is easy... drive a bit over to 90th St where the hospital is. Park your car there and run the Greenbelt. Its scenic, green, and paved. It passes several small ponds with water fountains, and its about as close to a serene jog that you'll find in a city.

The "dry heat" factor makes a difference, but for me the biggest factor in comfort / safety is direct sun exposure. On a cloudless day, having the sun shining directly on skin can raise the temperature someone experiences by 15 degrees or so. For that reason, most runners shift to sunrise during the hottest months of the year. The sun will be lower in the sky and, you'll be more likely to benefit from what little shade might be available. You'll also be more likely to see other runners on the trail, which may be an advantage in terms of personal safety.

In October you'll be fine temperature wise. Even in the very early morning in August and September it's doable.
