Hello All -

Longggggg time reader, first time starting a thread. We currently live in North Central (7th St and North of Northern) and are looking to move in the next 6-12 months. Have a 16 month old & looking for a little less Sunnyslope and more family oriented/kids playing/etc. Wife works in North Scottsdale and I work in the West Valley near I-10. This has made north central fantastic over the years in regards to access, things to do, and places to grub.

Last year drove around looking for Halloween decorations, noticed East Camelback, some Royal Palm, the neighborhood south of Northern and west of 7th Ave. Thought that might be a good indicator of kiddo-friendly hoods.

We are fortunate in budget, however, would still like to stay around ~$500K. We could go higher for amazing opportunity (i.e. extra $200K). Although that would mean we would both have to always work.

Not interest in suburbs [not to offend, just not for us].

Thank you for any input. Would even be happy to know about places that have 1-3 streets that have lots of kids, etc.

The Pasadena Neighborhood seems nice (7th to 15th Ave between Camelback and Missouri)

We haven't been here too long, but we are loving Moon Valley. We are purchasing in the neighborhood south of Thunderbird against Shaw Butte but we also really love all the neighborhoods north of Thunderbird and south of Greenway between 7th and Coral Gables. Schools are solid. I have two at Lookout Mountain and one at Mountain Sky JHS. I see moms every morning at Moon Valley Park with their toddlers. Kids close to those schools bike or walk. It's very family oriented and we feel like we've made a wonderful choice. I'll report back after Halloween. I feel like the trick or treat vibe always says a lot about an area. LOL.

I second this. I live in Moon Valley and it's very safe, affordable, and family-friendly. I'm actually looking to live closer to where you are currently to reduce my mileage driving into Uptown where I work (I'm not an office worker so I do a lot of driving outside of the commute as well) but if mileage wasn't an issue I would stay where I am.

When I do need to go into the office, which is in the Scottsdale Quarter, I take Greenway all the way across. At 7 am it takes me half an hour on Greenway to get there. It was shorter a month or two ago. Most of that time is spent trying to get past the 32nd St/Greenway intersection, I usually sit there for about four cycles. This might get a bit longer once the snowbirds starting coming in full force, I'd expect a maximum morning commute of 40 minutes with snowbirds and events like Phoenix Open that come in and clog the area where my office is. I wouldn't touch the 101 with a ten-foot pole for a morning commute into Scottsdale unless she worked quite literally next to the 101. Better to take surface streets I think from Moon Valley.

Not sure how long a commute would take from here to SW Valley, not sure I would want to know either, the I-17 isn't all that fun. Back when I used to commute on the I-17 I would stay going on the on/off ramp the whole way down, technically exiting and re-entering the freeway at every exit. That would save me some time on most days.

I third Moon Valley. I have lived here (near the corner of 7th Ave and Coral Gables) for 13 years and agree with everything already said. Both ringler24 and Prickly Pear have summed up the area accurately. For your price range there are many extremely well maintained properties with nice size lots that have pools (or not) and lovely landscaping to choose from that are for sale in the area. Also there are communities with and without HOA's so there is something for everyone.
