I could see a long term need for commuter trains which would allow people to come into the city by train from like surprise or San tan valley like an east coast city but I don’t see a citywide subway network happening in Phoenix at least not anytime soon especially with self driving cars like the above posters pointed out.

Well...what works well in one area may not be the solution in others. The Western United States (for the most part) was built/designed/modernized during the age of the automobile. The sprawl spurred on by a lack of physical boundaries has perpetuated and made alternate modes of transportation either not feasible or extremely expensive to retrofit into the current environment. The issue that i have is people tend to make up a non-existent problem to fit with their proposed solution, i.e. "We need trains...see other places have trains and light rail...now what statistic can we make up to support my solution?" It is like buying stuff you don't really need because of a perceived NEED to buy something.
