South Tempe is low crime.
I assume he was trying to be funny. Those are both very nice zip codes in which to live.

Most of the crime is on the west side of the city, mainly Maryvale and the neighborhoods flanking the 17 between Durango and Thunderbird

Totally agree.

Those are somewhat better than 85015, 85006, 85008, and most of 85021. 16 is Madison school district, too.
Both have bounced back big from the crash price wise.

I'm 20 minutes from downtown in Moon Valley and I can walk a good while in either direction from my house without worrying about crime. Honestly I have been all over the city and even in less desirable areas I don't worry about being shot, but in terms of where I would enjoy walking around, I like where we live.

The problem with these things are that "crime" is awfully ambiguous. When you look at the crime rate stats, it includes far more than just violent crime, and even then, violent crime is more than just getting shot. Despite the high crime rates, I spent many years in Detroit, and was never once concerned about getting shot, mugged, or any other direct violent crime. On the other hand, I was very worried about my stuff disappearing...

Ironically, where I now live, Wittmann, I'm much more concerned about getting shot, but not from a "criminal"...my concern is from the absurdly paranoid neighbors that think that everyone that drives past their house is looking to rob them.
