Suns Legacy Partners wants to build an additional parking facility for their downtown sports arena.
The hotel was one of two owned by Suns Legacy Partners, on land eyed for parking. Parts of the hotel were spared after a fight by preservationists, though a compromise was limited to saving the front and lobby of the hotel.
Year demolished: 2012. The front and lobby of the hotel were preserved and still stand on the site.

See above for a good explanation of why the St. James was partially demolished. However, that hotel is not next to the Hilton Garden Inn. The remnants of the St. James are on Madison Street. The Hilton Garden Inn is located several blocks to the north on Monroe Street. Are we talking about the same hotel?

I was asking about the hotel st. James as well as another hotel that sits abandoned and it's right next to the Hilton Garden Inn at least I think that was a hotel

Thanks for clarifying. The building next to the Hilton Garden Inn is the Steinegger Lodging House. It was once a hotel and is considered historic, although its charms are hard to appreciate with the building boarded up the way it is. There have been efforts in recent years to renovate it and reuse it in some way, but nothing definitive. See the links below for more info:

According to the article, the hotel which was spared was the Madison. The building adjacent to the Madison (St. James) was the demolished one. Here's a street view of how the block looks now, but there's an option to set the date to 2009 before demolition:

It's a difficult topic. I read one of the articles posted, and in some cases I found it questionable that they buildings cited were actually historic, unless you want to claim every old building is historic.

"Historic" is tossed around loosely in Phoenix. Hipsters were upset when a "historic" drive-thru liquor closed and it was feared to location would be razed. Cinder blocks painted pink that none of them actually went to.
