I live in La Quinta, which is adjacent to Palm Desert. The weather is basically the same as Phoenix area. The area caters more to retired and wealthy people, which is great if you are one, not so great to find things to do if you happen to have kids. Lots of restaurants here. I'm thinking of moving to Phoenix (or Oregon) LOL. The jobs out here are basically in resorts/hospitality, tourism, casinos, and hospital/medical. We moved here because my husband was born here, but neither of us has found a job we like. If you have specific questions let me know. I like Phoenix more because there more jobs in my filed, the houses cost less for more, and there is more to do for a family. If you are retired though you may prefer this area.

Just notice you said Scottsdale, not Phoenix. I guess housing would be very similar then. I've been comparing to Gilbert and Glendale areas, which are less than Palm Desert.
Oh, there are tons of golf courses here too. PGA West is here in La Quinta.

I personally think Phoenix (and its surroundings-- Scottsdale in your case) blows away the Coachella Valley. Granted, I haven't seen every nook and cranny of Palm Desert (but I have stayed in Palm Springs before), but from what I've seen, that whole valley is extremely windy, extremely polluted (LA's pollution gets blown that way), and ugly, with the one exception of Mt. San Jacinto. I think Scottsdale will be a major step up!

I agree. I have a child though, so to me it's much better over there. There are no master planned communities catering to families/kids here like over in Phoenix area. I'm talking like Vistancia, Val Vista Lakes, Power Ranch, etc. Scottsdale has way more shopping and restaurants just because it's bigger, and you have the whole of Phoenix to chose from. I don't live over there, but I used to drive up from Tucson quite a bit. It kind of depends what you like to do though. I love horses, so the fact that Scottsdale has one of the largest Arabian horse shows in the world, and tons of horse breeders/ranches up in north Scottsdale makes it far more desirable than here in Palm Desert/La Quinta area.

Never been there, but the City-Data page looks interesting. Up in the pines. C-D has the elevation at 3700 ft but Google Earth has them in the 5000 to 6000+ ft range.

Idyllwild is very lovely. You are spot on about Salton Sea area...it is beyond horrible. I feel sorry for those old guys that bought their lots 30/40 years ago and fell for the idea that it was going to be the "California Riviera"! The stench in summer is beyond belief! And the dead fish!
