Hey fellow New Yorkers! I moved here from the UES.
Now, as I understood that post, they want to stay for a visit, not to move here. So they would have to stay in a hotel, motel or resort. Almost all Scottsdale motels, hotels and resorts are in areas that are relatively safe. Even the motel 6 at Camelback Fashion Square is in a good area of town. As every city of that size, Scottsdale has a few areas where a tourist should not hang around, but most probably wouldn't anyway, because there is nothing to be seen or done. The rather seedy areas of Scottsdale are along Scottsdale Road south of downtown, and the Paiute area mentioned here before, which borders Phoenix south of Camelback Road. They are basically the oldest parts of Scottsdale apart from downtown, and they offer nothing to the tourist, so you wouldn't want to hang out there. That said, I have been in those places and it is nothing compared to West Phoenix. Or East New York in Brooklyn. Scottsdale as a whole is relatively safe. |

The Paiute neighborhood is actually quite small - not only S. of Camelback, but also Indian School and I'd even venture to say it's mostly limited to an area S. of Osborn to Avalon, with 68th to the E. and 66th to the West.
Link It's an older area that's mostly aged rental units that is home to mostly lower income Hispanics. Probably 99% of them are good people, mostly service workers who work in the area restaurants, resorts, etc. It's grittier than most of Scottsdale, but nothing like typical "bad" hoods. Some of the adjacent areas are also a bit older in feel, but are being revitalized due to the Southward march of major projects. The Valley Ho, for example, is a few blocks north and was a dumpy, abandoned mid century hotel that was completely renovated and is now one of the retro gems in AZ. |

For the record: north of Osborn @ 64th-68th St is acutally quite nice--------the demarcation line is that sharp.
