Kachina dolls - where to buy
Anyone know where to buy kachina dolls in the area? I saw some in old town, but I'm scared to buy them there b/c I'm scared I am getting scammed.

I'd recommend the Heard Museum shop. You can buy online, but it would probably be more fun to visit the museum in person.

Old Town isnt a bad place to get them at all. In fact, many shops will bargain. We got some real nice ones just by telling the shop owner that we saw some down the street for cheaper.
Rawhide, cheesy as that place is, has some stores with "cheap" Kachinas.

Authentic Kachina's will have signed authentication papers that go with them.
Besides the Heard Museum, there are several Indian specialty stores like Ortegas etal that sell the real dolls. Check the Yellow pages.

Yes, this is a MUST when you purchase one. If it doesnt have the paper on it showing the artist and picture, it was probably built by Billy Joe Bob in his garage out in Wickenburg.

I agree with the others who warned you about getting authentication papers. Be very careful...some Kachina's are $5,000+. Find the ones you want and then do some checking on the internet about the artist. The Heard Museum, I am sure is reputable.
I think you can also by them directly from the artists on the reservation. I don't know much about this, but it's worth looking into. Good luck. I know a couple who collected rare Kachinas and they just loved looking for new ones. Just like fine art...it is addicting. Even the cheaper ones are very interesting and could start your collection off.
Sounds fun!
