I love that Canyonero commercial. On-board refineries would be nice, though the engine computers would start charging you more instantaneously if a natural disaster occurs anywhere in the world.

Well sure, if you like your jeeps underpowered, with weak axles and having harsh suspensions with little articulation. The more recent TJ's out perform the older CJ's in every way. The most off-road-worthy Jeep ever produced is the Jeep Rubicon, by a mile. Dana 44 axles, front and rear, with electrically operated air-powered lockers, on stock 16" alloy rims, and 31" off-road tires. That's in a league by itself compared to any CJ model ever produced.

Of course, we're talking factory stock vehicles here. There is no point in arguing about modified vehicles, as the list of possibilities is endless, and it really comes down to a money game. Throw 39" tires and proper gearing, suspension and good axles on anything and you'll have a vehicle that'll go anywhere. And yes, that includes the Suzuki Samarai, or even a Dodge Dart for that matter.

I have a co worker with a lifted V10 Dodge with I dont know, 44" tires who never goes offroad. I would say this is not atypical of Phoenix. However it is your right to drive an 8mpg truck. I believe fuel prices will sort these things out.

j760, I think the government should regulate fuel consumption minimums. 8 miles per gallon vehicles should be illegal, however as long as it is LEGAL, I agree with you completely. Obviously our citizens are not setting limits for themselves and for the sake of the environment (don't care about someone elses gas bill), they should be regulated. Especially in the Valley. I think this has to come at the federal level. Of course you can take a 12mpg truck and make it 8mpg but I don't think 12mpg is acceptable either.

Let's see: 18 wheelers - truckers, get 8/10 mpg - should they be outlawed too?

Motorhomes: some only get 10 / 12 mpg. Should they be outlawed?

And, exactly what MPG is "accpetable" to you?

I drive an SUV because I like to be higher up off the ground. Also we need the cargo space in the back and it's great for our dogs too. Also I like the way SUVS drive and look. For us, it's personal preference and convenience. Now the gas mileage is another story.

Greatday - It would have to depend on the class of the vehicle.

If you want me to make specific mileage suggestions? I am not an expert but I would think 12mpg for a motorhome is completely reasonable, as is 6mpg for a class 8 truck. But is 8mpg in a 6000# truck reasonable... NO!

Or we could just wait until gas is $10/gallon and people will start changing their habits.

How about a "standard" SUV? What is "acceptable" gas mileage to you?

10? 15? 20? 25? 30?
