I don't understand? Most SUV's I see are not Cayennes, BMW's, Caddy's they are Fords, Toyotas, Chevys, Hondas...hardly "expensive" vehicles even with lift kits and big tires.

There are the Chev, Fords etc SUV's that can get into the high 30's, 40's and even 50k ranges

Ok, and thats a status symbol? A co-worker just bought an Audi S6 and it was well over $70,000...now that to me is expensive and a little outrageous, LOL but is sure is nice.

Actually - I don't consider any SUV "status" symbols.

I merely consider them the vehicle that someone wanted to buy and drive.

they weren't as common a while back and there was some carryover ........ also you couldn't get a Kia SUV, a Saturn SUV, etc

it was mainly jeeps, land rovers, etc that had a lot of space and built in features

as they became more popular the prices went down, the # of people who owned them went up and the status shifted from having an SUV to having a Hummer, Escalade, Cayenne, etc

Same here. I think of expensive cars, usually sports or luxury cars, that are gas guzzlers yet half the size of a mid-sized SUV as a status symbol.

i don't think of any car as a status symbol - what you drive isn't going to change my opinion one way or another

however, some do think otherwise

Fair enough - however, the number of large P/U's and SUV's are also very high in states where you do not see someone with a firearm on their belt - California would be a great example for instance.

Yes: I do own a 10-12 MPG (in town) fullsized SUV-------it is a 1990 GMC Suburban that I paid the 'princely sum' of $1,500 for in late 2006. My roundtrip commute to work is 10 miles-----and, no car payment

Side note here: compared to even 6 months ago.....there are far fewer fullsized trucks/SUV's on the road today with the obvious exception of business vehicles.
