I'm curious what people think the most interesting and unusual things in Phoenix are. I'm talking about the hidden gems, suprises, or unusual experiences you might not expect to find, but are excited when you do. Unusually good restaurants, beautiful parks, quirky shops or attractions -- anything that really stands out that you particularly enjoy seeing, eating, or doing.

Restaurants: Il Posto (Italian), Elements (American, with an amazing view), Mary Coyle's (ice cream)

Parks: Papago Park and the Phoenix Zoo. Encanto Park is also nice and surprisingly green.

Quirky Shops: Probably the Mix, a group of shops in downtown Scottsdale. There's also some interesting little artist studios to see near and in downtown Phoenix, particularly on First Fridays. Downtown Phoenix is beginning to develop a "vibe," which is genuinely exciting.

Attractions: The Heard Museum is like nothing else in the country. The Desert Botanical Garden is also spectacular.

Fantastic resorts. I don't think a lot of locals actually stop in, thinking they are for tourists. But they are worth visiting. As mentioned, Elements is fantastic. So is the Frank Llyod Wright-inspired Biltmore, Boulders, Camelback Inn, The Phoenician, Valley Ho and others. My personal fave is the Royal Palms. If you like design, plants, cutting edge features, then check them out. You need not be staying there.

We like to see the displays at the state fair/ anything and everything is there! Heck, this year I'm entering a bunch of stuff myself in the crafts dept.

Every Velentines they have that huge book sale. We love that too! Also on Valentines we like going to the Gem Show in Tuscon. We like different also!

We went one Saturday on a train ride in Vale Verde. It was a very nice day and rode in the dome car where you got breakfast. It was just a day trip and wasn't that expensive. I prefer doing stuff over just shopping.

I was pleasantly surprised when I visited Glendale's historic downtown area last winter. Lots of activity and interesting shops, especially if you like antiques, collectibles and such.

I just visited Downtown Glendale for the first time this week, and what a great town! I love all the antique shops, places to eat, and quaintness of the area. A Mad Hatters antiques can keep you busy all day, as there is so much to see in there. I love the tree lined streets, and am looking forward to Glendale Glitters to really get in the Christmas spirit!

I lived in Phoenix for 15 years and recently moved to Chicago. I can't believe how lacking Phoenix is along the lines of interesting things to do and see. I was a stay at home mom for 6 years in the 90s and was contantly on the prowl for interesting things to do and see and was always greatly disappointed. Roadtripping to Prescott was the high point of my 15 years there.

You just didn't go to the right places.

Here's a thread I started a while back on unusual attractions and sites in Phoenix. I had the best intentions on updating it, but, well, I didn't. I will try to add to it now.

(BTW, check out the Arizona Republic today - interesting article on the castle on the side of Camelback Mountain - it's up for sale if you can pony up 3.5 million. Cool photos of the interior)
