Hopefully someone will be able to help you with that. I almost NEVER make it out that far. I have heard that Valle Luna and Blue Iguana are great and in your neighborhood. But yes, Carolina's in a hole in the wall, but very clean inside and they have great salsa, very hot and spicy and excellent food. I would recommend El Portal or La Canasta which are much less hole in the wall, LOL. If you want more modest to upscale, I say stick with Ajo Al's, Abuelo's, Garduno's, etc.

Is Abuelo's good? I've wanted to go there before but never made it.

I second the recommendation for Valle Luna... it's the only one as a chain that I really care to eat at. Also want to mention that Carolina's has another fairly new location at the NE corner of Cactus and Cave Creek Roads in North Phoenix. My husband is a very happy camper because he grew up near the old original one and he would make the trek once in a while to get his "fix". Now he can go anytime he wants!

Lucky for you, you're right around the corner from one of the best Mexican restaurants in the valley. Los Olivos Norte is at FLW and Hayden. The only better Mexican restaurant is the original Los Olivos in downtown Scottsdale.

Am I right in thinking Carolina's is more casual than Abuelo's?
I am alone so going to a sit down restaurant with waitress service is a little awkward. Not that I wouldn't do it but a "quick serve" restaurant is easier.

Carolina's is 100% more casual and is "quick serve" whereas Abuelo's is a hosted and waited restaurant.

Carolina's is DEFINITELY worth the trip! The best tortillas! Awesome hot sauce, great beef tacos, definitely give the beef enchiladas a try!

For the closest to Chicago pizza, go to one of the Rosatis opening up in the valley.
