World has more millionaires and they're getting richer

The Associated Press 8:47 AM CDT, June 24, 2008 Article tools

The world's millionaires club is getting bigger -- and its members decidedly richer.

The number of people around the globe with at least $1 million in assets swelled by 6 percent last year to 10.1 million, according to the 12th annual World Wealth Report released Tuesday by Merrill Lynch & Co. and Capgemini Group, a consulting firm.

That means an additional 600,000 people became millionaires or richer even as problems tied to the U.S. credit crisis spread in the second half of the year.

The combined wealth of the millionaires' club meanwhile grew 9.4 percent to $40.7 trillion. Their average wealth, which didn't include primary homes, surpassed $4 million for the first time.

The super rich -- those with at least $30 million -- grew by 8.8 percent in population while their accumulated wealth grew by 14.5 percent. This rarefied group controls about a third of the $40.7 trillion.

For such an elite club, 10.1 million may seem like a lot of members. But the figure represents just 0.15 percent of the world's population of 6.7 billion.

When taking into account inflation and the expansion of the world economy, the growth in the number of people with at least $1 million is not surprising, said Brian Bethune, an economist with Global Insight.

An increase of around 15 percent to 20 percent would mark an unexpected jump, he said.

The 6 percent growth in the number of wealthy individuals -- while down from last year's growth of 8.3 percent -- is nevertheless significant, said Ileana Van Der Linde, a principal with Capgemini. The slowest growth in the report's 12-year history was 2.1 percent in 2002.

India, China and Brazil saw the biggest growth rates in the number of wealthy individuals (22.7 percent, 20.3 percent, 19.1 percent, respectively). The United States, Japan and Germany still had the highest number of wealthy individuals, however.

The U.S. is home to about a third of those around the world with at least $1 million.

Steady worldwide growth powered the first half of 2007, but more mature markets were hammered in the second half by the U.S. housing and credit crises. Emerging economies were largely unaffected and continued robust growth into the second half of the year, the report found.

“It was a year of two halves. We saw divergent paths starting in July,” Van Der Linde said.

The lag started showing signs of catching up with emerging economies in the beginning of 2008, she said.

The economic slowdown resulted in the wealthy shifting their assets to safer investments, such as cash deposits and fixed-income securities. Those two categories accounted for 44 percent of the world's wealthiest assets, up 9 percentage points from 2006.

The wealth of the world's richest is projected to reach $59.1 trillion by 2012, advancing at a rate of 7.7 percent, according to the report.

Yes it's dusgusting. Check this out. I am a social worker. Last year I did an internship at a homeless shelter - the YWCA. I learned that if you sleep on your friends couch you are not homeless, even though you could be kicked out at any time and it's not your own place. The real kicker, a family that is homeless does not get counted into their statistics of chronically homeless. HUD doesn't want the world to know the truth about how many families, meaning children, are homeless! So all those stats you hear about how many homeless any given city has, it's false, and they know it.

What are you guys, like 10 years old? Not trying to be mean but you just realized this horrible economical imbalance around the world?

Same logic as a lottery with a jackpot of $3 million that you get to win by only spending $1, meaning 3+ million people has to lose minimum $1 for one or more people to win the total jackpot.

If you see a millioner, that pretty much means a million or more people are financially doing a lot worse than that guy is, whether they got jacked or didn't their play their cards right or whatever...

I don't see how this topic relates to Phoenix area or even Arizona?

Sometimes it's nice to just have a topic for Arizona to talk about that effects all the states. And this one is just as important here as it is everywhere, why shouldn't we share our views on it. I would like to know how AZ feels about the poor. It reflects character. I for one would like to see a more socialist environment, I'm sure thats no surprise and I am opening myself up for some slack but it's how I feel.

AZ Lottery announced that there are $9,000,000 in unclaimed prizes. Most of that money being $1.00 and $5.00 prizes. So there must be a lot of people with extra spendable money to be playing the Lottery. Then the Indian Casinos in AZ recently reported taking in 24 million dollars last year. Think about that. Someone has money to waste.

Here's how I feel about the poor in Arizona. There are plenty of them and my wish would be for more people to have a chance to be economically sound.

We see homeless people at my church. We go to a homeless shelter for church and there are so many poor and you can't help but feel so fortunate. We hire from time to time homeless men to do labor work around home, like painting and such.

There are so many of these folks at stop lights w/ signs asking for money and we always have some cash in our car so we can give a few dollars to these people. The guilt if we don't give is just awful. Can't help be feel for the poor. I feel bad for anyone who is barely making it but for those who are dirty and literally begging , just breaks the heart!

A good percentage of those stoplight people begging for money probably have more money than you. Several news reports last year uncovered numerous scams at the stoplights. Ask them next time if you can buy them a meal and see what they say, no, it's cause they need money for booze or drugs.

If money is what they need that is what we give. Not our job to determine if they're telling us the truth. You may very well be right though!

For those of you that have spent the last 20 years in a cave, the world has experienced an unprecedented increase in prosperity. Famine has been almost eliminated except for areas engaged in war. In our country most people that are classified as poor own their own home. Why you would be upset about that is beyond my comprehension.
